Are you supposed to be able to push down lifters by hand (with pushrod)?

I cant push mine down i thought i read somewhere your supposed to be able. or maybe that was if they were bad. idk im trying to figure out this knock im getting under my valve cover. and now im also getting a tick. Ive already checked my headers back for leaks and the noise under the valve cover is like someone is rapping there knuckles under it really hard.

I think there may be some misleading info here. the op doesnt give much info either. If you CANNOT tilt your rocker or push the pushrod down by hand and have the plunger go down, given that your lifter is NOT filled with oil and both valves are in the CLOSED position, then you have adjusted your valve train wrong and your gonna be holding open valves. Im pretty sure this guy means the pplunger on the top of the lifter. not the whole lifter itself. I think the guys lifters are fine. Do you have roller rockers? what are your mods. is the car stock?

The car is stock im just trying to figure out the sound im hearing. I havent touched the valvetrain at all just took the valve cover off and was trying to see if there was anything obviously wrong.

Its stock huh. Will you cant adjust your vavletrain them dude. Your rockers are torqued to spec then. Basically they just bolt on and thats it. if you have a valve train noise then its possible that you have a bad lifter. The beuty of hydraulic lifters is they compensate. How many miles on it? I wouldnt mess with doing that job unless i planned on doing h/c/i swap or if i wanted to just replace all the gaskets and clean and paint the engine. could you ossibly get some video of the car running

yeah it would be nice if i could adjust it. I want to do a h/c/i swap but have to come up with funds. I may be able tp get video tomorrow. I just dont want to mess anything up worse. The car has 143,000 miles.
