Can't beat LT1

a stock lt1 will run 13.9. A stock 99-04 gt will run 13.9. the reason he is pulling you so bad is because those gears are made to pull you out of the hole not give you more top end power. A lt1 puts down about 10 more rwhp than a PI 4.6. I have never seen one put down over 250 at the wheels being stock. They only come with 280 hp at the motor stock. The reason he is pulling you up top is because of his gears not because it is so much more powerful than you car is. His car should have 3.42 gears. The old fow body mustangs are the same way. If they had 3.08 gears they would run the 1/4 mile in 14.5 at like 105 miles an hour.

Hm... you still think though that uptop the gears would help me out more because they get me in my powerband faster. I dunno, my friend wrecked his car, so, thats out of the question. I did race another friend who has a 2000 GT,5 spd, stock exhaust, air intake, and a chip running 91 octane. We raced today and it was neck and neck all the way down... I swear theres something wrong with my car because I can drive fine. He did say that whenever he was behind me on the way to the strip that whenever I downshifted into second and romped it... there was a little black smoke that came out... Is that just carbon buildup or is it something to be worried about? Also, I wonder if I could have my car tuned? Do I have enough stuff on it that it would actually effect it?

Lt1's got some grunt down low...but if you slip the clutch right you'll have him everytime...consistently...

Your car should walk him...it is either your not shifting quick enough or he has got a few bolt-ons???

By the way shift at 57-5800...ideally on these 4.6's...it is best to shift 300-400 rpm higher than where you power starts dropping off...

Also where did you buy the car from...I see your from Arkansas and there isn't even a quarter mile track in Arkansas...Centerville (where I race) is only a 1000ft...

Good Luck
Bought it from a kid in Oklahoma... I live in the ft smith area.

god i dont think ive seen so many misconceptions about LT1's and 99+ GT's in one post. "274rwhp" "LT1's suck down low" "SS's cant launch" "you should rape him"

SS's can launch like bats outa hell... LT1's kick ass down low... and they have maybe 280hp CRANK, which puts you 240-255rwhp depending on the tranny....and no, your 99+ GT shouldnt rape him, its actually a really close race.

believe me, i have a lot of experience battling LT1 camaro's, one in particular. we always go mod for mod, i get my exhaust, he goes and gets exhaust, i do a port and polish on my intake plenum, he puts on a throttle body. we've traded wins for a while now, im still on top, but not by much. and if anyone says its "the driver", youve got another thing coming to you.

as for beating this guy, lose any weight you can afford to drop, practically. spare tire, jack, misc. crap in the back seat and trunk. roll out to the races on just below a half tank of gas, and run 87, NOT 91. with 9.4-1 compression, unless your spraying or boosting, 91 is a big big mistake, you will make more power on 87, every time. other than all that, powershift and keep your windows up... but seriously, start doing some real mods if you want to beat LT1's all day. good luck man.

My LT1 with just a cat-back and CAI put down 258.9 rwhp and 298.4 rwtq last weekend. And that was running pretty rich on the stock tune, and arcing ignition coil. LT1's torque curve is excellent too, by 2500 rpm's I was already at 290 rwtq. It stayed flat as a table all the way to 4800 where it started to drop. It was still 235 rwtq at 5600 too.

Yes but weight is going offset that extra hp.

I have a friend that has a 94 Camaro, it has a cat less exhaust, K&N intake and is chipped(I think). and its an auto. My car is a stock 2001 GT 5spd. We took off from a dig and he fell to my rear bumper, I made it to the top of 1st when he started to pull up on me, I hit 2nd and he kept barely pulling, by 3rd he had barely taken the lead. In the end I was into 4th and at his rear bumber.

His mom also has a mid 90's Z28 auto, as far as I know it's stock she hung with me half way through 1st then I walked away.

There was this other Convert Z28 auto that was chipped that I raced. He was power breaking off the line and would nudge past me at the top of 1st, but I always came back in 3rd and nudged by him for the win. The last time we went I turned off my TC and I pulled away from him all the way through first. He caught up though when I shifted slowly into 3rd, I still won though. In 4th if it was a coupe it would have been a lot closer. I might even had lost.

I think with your mods you should smoke him. I've beat a couple more Z28s then that, one was keeping up right next to me but we only got threw first.

Auto LT1's came with either the option for a 2.73 rear end, or 3.23, which affect acceleration quite a bit. There are no "chips" you can get for the LT1, you have to have the PCM reprogrammed, and there's no real benefit in that unless you have a decent amount of mods that the stock program isn't equipped for.

Also keep in mind that GM developed the LT1 back in the late 80's, and introduced it in 1992. So I'd say it's not doing too bad for an engine that went into production over a decade ago. :nice: Even the newest LT1 is still at least 6 years old, so wear n' tear is a factor also.
