cant get rid of the miss

alright lets see how good i can descibe this

theres a loud put coming from the #4 cylinder
i took the valve cover off and started the engine and tightend the rocker arm and the miss stoped for a couple seconds then i would have to tighten it again cause it would start back up

so i think its a collapsed hydraulic lifter i replace both of them for that cylinder and both the pushrods too. still the miss

so i take the rollers from the #1 cylinder and put them on #4 to see if they are worn and still the miss on 4

then i move on to ignition, i get new plugs...still missing
i check to see if i have a crossfire going on and no.

now when i take the plug wire off of the distributor for the #4 , you can hear something still isnt right but the loud putting stops and almost sound normal....

any help guys? this has got me and pops scratchin our heads

If your sure that the nut is not backing off, then check to see if the stud is pulling out of the head.
runn a straight edge across the rockers to check for ones pulling up.

run a compression test, could be bad valve, cracked or burnt seat.
from you discription i am assuming it's on the exhaust side of #4.
their the first to give way.

i forgot to add something, there was either oil or gas on the spak plug threads, it was black but smelled of gas

then your prob looking at a non seating or burnt valve having little to no compression to light off the fuel.
a compression test or blow by test will show more.
