I changed the gears in rear end, and after buttoning everything back up, I can't seem to rotate the driveshaft by hand anymore. Is this normal or a problem? I ran car and put in first and second, driveshaft spun fine, no noises, everything seemed very smooth. Just wondering why I still cant rotate driveshaft by hand

At the risk of stating the obvious, is the transmission in neutral? Is the parking brake set?

How did you set the pinion bearing pre-load?

How did you set the carrier back lash? What is it set to? What does the paint contact area look like?

Definitely a problem.

Did you check the pinion preload before bolting the driveshaft into place?

What torque was required to rotate the pinion before the carrier went in? Could you rotate the pinion after the carrier went in?

If the bearing preload is wrong or the gears are binding because there's no backlash (for example) you're going to burn up the rear in short order.

used a digital caliper. yes, in neutral, no parking brake. spun freely before installing carrier, spun freely until I torqued carrier bolts. at hand tight, spun by hand, but was little tight

What was the backlash set to?

What shims did you use when installing the carrier?

I'd take the cover off, drain the fluid and re-check the install. It sounds as if the backlash is non-existent and/or that the carrier preload is too great.

+1. If you have it in neutral, the park brake off and the wheels off the ground (hehe gotta state the obvious) then you have missed something inside. Open it back up and check everything. You did not say anything about the wear pattern - did you check it? This is a good indicator of your problem. Check and get back to us.
