so im racing this all motor 5.0 on the h-way (mopac) doing about 65 or so and go to shift to 4th from 5th. so i slam in the clutch and before i can even get the shifter out of 5th i hear a loud pop/snap. i cant get the shifter into any gear and i coast off the highway in neutral. i coasted into a parking lot where i called my dad and a tow truck. so i wait ~15 min and start it up. it then goes into 1st and im able to drive it home with a few symtoms. i think its a throw-out bearing. here are the symtoms:
1)there is a strange mechanical whirring noise when the clutch is in and when its in gear;goes away when driving w/ the clutch disengaged.
2)i lost about 1/3 clutch pressure
3)every gear clunks when i shift into it.
4)the strangest-the clutch pedal is raised and comes out about 1-3 inches, like somthing happened to the pivot point.

i dont think its a burnt clutch b/c i put the car in 5th at ~30 and floored it and it grabbed
so how much do you think labor would be to replace a throw-out bearingmor do you think i can replace it myself?
can anyone give some advice/let me know what you think is wrong? thanks

the TOB is not expensive, about 36 bucks for a centerforce one. However, to change it you have to drop the transmission down so you can slide it off the input shaft of the transmission. I'm not sure that's your problem, but that is what is involved with changing it.

It's a good 5-6 hours of labor probably, so expect to pay around $50-60 bucks an hour if you have somebody do it. You will also need to get tranny fluid since you will lose a lot of it out the back of the transmission when they pull the driveshaft out.

idk if a throwout would effect the way your gears go in or the pedal moving up. I would guess you damaged the pressure plate.

that's what I was thinking, but the TOB is what pushes on the pressure plate.

Here's my suggestion: since you will have to anyway, just take out the tranny and find out what's wrong if anything and then go buy a replacement.

Centerforce TOB is very heavy duty. The stock number from summit is CTF-N1714

well, i havent taken the tranny class yet, so i guess it looks like this will be the last big thing from a mechanic. if he has to pull the tranny, i want to go ahead and replace everything. new clutch, flywheel, clutch cable, etc. i was looking at steeda'a products, as they are a good name. anyone have any suggestions as to what to replace and what brand? its a daily driver w/ occasional track visits. goal is to s/c in the next 4 years

Ive heard good things about the Centerforce, and also the Spec Stage 2 clutch, as long as you dont use their TOB. But yea, go ahead and replace everything since you are down there.

any thoughts on which brand? steeda and UPR both offer clutch accessories (cable, quadrant, firewall adjuster) but UPR is cheaper. quality?

good idea, as long as youre in there might as well do it right. I have a King Cobra clutch (from FRPP), a steeda adjustible clable, Tri-ax shifter. awsome combo. I never drove a centerforce before, but would highly suggest to look into the kc clutch. I kept the stock flywheel so i cant help you there
