Car loses power intemittantly!!

Shoot, there are a BUNCH of us WITH mass air that have this same problem...should we switch to speed density?

Dude, what the hell are you talking about?? You quoted me and basically what I said was that mass air and speed density have nothing at all to do with my problem. I get responses like "switch to mass air, that'll fix it" and I was saying that whether I'm sd or maf has no friggin connection to my problem because I am full aware that maf peeps have this problem as well. So I simply deduced that switching to maf will do jack **** in this case and I was trying to state that without writing a friggin book as I have just now had to do. So again, what the hell are you talking about?

How about dropping the attitude.
I was agreeing with you. Its called sarcasm. If sd people have problems and to "fix" it you switch to maf...then (by using their logic) those of us with maf issues should switch to sd. Get it.

I have a sd car AND a maf car. Each has periodically had idle issues...both have not had idle issues for the majority of their lives (88 and 93).

You'll make friends and get more help if you play nice.

Sorry dude, its kinda hard sometimes to pick up on sarcasm when its just in text. It's much easier listening to someone's voice :D Anyway, didnt mean to come off as a jackass, I just get frustrated when someone mentions mass air no matter what it is.....drives me nuts when people use that to solve the world's problems. OK, back to my car sucking, come on somebody has to have fixed something like this before....

I am having the exact (or very close) problem currently. My 88sd car was throwing a code 34 EGR fault. I would be driving down the freeway and the car just went limp. stepped on the gas and nothing, it was barely idleing at 500 rpm's. Stepping on the gas actually made the problem worse, even causing a small backfire. I was stranded on the Freeway this weekend and had to be towed home. The car had me by the balls :owned: I did not even have a screwdirver in the car :bang:

My thinking was the EGR was stuck open, choking out the a/f mixture. I replaced the egr valve and so far so good... code 11 after a 20 mile drive in town. Your God-damned right I had a tool kit in the car this time!!!

Maybe this helps you??? Hang in there.

my 89 had a similar problem and it took me a while to figure out. ended up being battery cables. they were corroded down inside the cable where i couldn't see it. might not be your problem but cheap to change and find out. good luck.

Thanks guys. Well, I replaced my battery cables with new 2 guage when I put my battery in the hatch and it's all making good connection. Idwitheld, my egr valve is blocked on my lower intake gaskets so I didn't hook the vaccum line to it, I just capped it at the intake or wherever it came from (can't remember). I did hook up the electronics just so I wouldnt have a harness lying around. Anyway, I just pulled my plugs out last night, they all looked brand new except for #4, it was a nasty dark brownish color. They ALL smelled like fuel tho........Any ideas? I'm thinking sticking injector on #4.....

I didnt read this whole thread but did you try replacing the (I cant remember the name of it right now... brain freeze) thing thats bolted to the distributor that has the wires plugged in to it. You know, the thing that gives the distributor electricity (not the coil). I feel stupid... I cant remember the name but do you know what IM talking about, if so replace that if you havent tried a new one already.

Did you replace that #4 plug?

Ever checked the injector harness and connections? You have checked a bunch of things, so maybe its time to look at what you HAVEN'T checked. Maybe something as innane as the color of your underwear that day. J/K. On my old 4 banger it would randomly buck and stumble. I was sure it was something really major, since I had tuned up the car a few weeks before. I never could find the problem, so I just lived with it for 2 years. When I went to sell it, I really needed to fix the problem to get top dollar, and guess what. The spark plug ends were cracked. They must have been cracked from the shop, I could have kicked myself. I'm rambling...I guess look closer at what you checked so far...SOMETHING has to be wrong with it, and I'm sure you will find it eventually.

Well, I fixed it!!! After checking all wiring (and I mean ALL wiring) and taking the intake off yet another time to check my rockers, I increased my fuel pressure by about 6 psi then went to the gas station and filled it up. Runs like a champ :D I was soooooooo pissed when that was the problem. My guess is since it sat in my buddy's garage for 8 months while I was building the motor and fixing the body, all sorts of nasty crap probably built up in the gas tank. Well, I never filled it up before, ,just put a couple gallons in at a time which I doubt was enough to dilute all that crud in there. That mixed with slightly low fuel pressure and wammo! Well it runs great now and it only sat for 6 moths while I tried to figure out the problem. Funny thing is that I replaced the fuel pump about a month ago and it seemed to me like there was plenty of gas in there :bang: Oh well, humility is sometimes a good thing.....
