Car reeks of fuel

when i put gas in my 92 lx 5.0 it really stinks of fuel really bad. but once it gets down in gas in the tank it doesnt stink. smells like its going through the hatch area where the spare tire is.

how can i fix this

Have you checked the filler tube to make sure there is no leak?

I had the same problem when I had to replace my sending unit. The filler neck gasket going into the tank was torn and the sending units o-ring was pinched after I replaced the unit. I actually had fuel in my spare tire wheel well after I filled up the tank.

Thanks guys. ill change that out. it did leak fuel out that really bad out of the filler tube Grommet area. it leaked when it went to about 1/2 a tank of fuel filling up.

i got to change the filters so ill do that too.
