Carb or EFI?

  • Go Carb'd, screw that PITA EFI crap!

K, Im gonna be at a crossraods soon. The new car will NOt have any 5.0 stuff in it. Ill have to make it a 5.0/5 speed car.

Question is do I:
- Swap all ym EFI stuff over and basically make it a 5.0 EFI car

or

- do I make it a Carb'd car. As in sell my EFi wiring/computer, retain my Walbro intank 255lph pump with a regulator, go with a new holley or Demon carb, and roll with it.

this is the itme to do it technically. Post what you think I should do. I have pros/cons for both so Im undecided at this point.

It's easy to do a carb car.... It's more respectible to see a fast EFI car.

yeah, iv'e always been quite parsial to fast efi cars. i did an efi to carb swap and didn't reALLY like it. mine was a street car though.

g0 with the carb. im d0ing a carb swap pretty s00n 0n my car just because i want t0. i d0nt care that every0ne says im retarded and that i will hate it and have n0thing but pr0blems....but wh0 cares. theres n0thing better than learning s0mething new. ive never 0wned a carb'd car and since ive been alive my parent havent either, s0 ive never seen what its like. but en0ugh ab0ut me, just d0 it.

ok well i know fuel injected is a lil more costley but the drivability is much nicer if you evr wanted to run a blower or turbo,not to mention that carbs have to be tuned on the regular for the most part. I did my complete 4 cyl swap in about 6 hours and the biggest pain was the fuelines coming back up into the enginebay.

i think i'd get rid of that pump if you go carb.

You can have issues with both. Carb is cheaper and easier, but EFI is more efficient and better for daily driving and emmisions.

I went carb with my coupe and havent looked back. No surging problem my 87 has. Get rid of that 255 pump to much pressure. I have heard of people using a stock pump and 2 regulators to get it down to the right psi.

One advantage of a carb is that it's all mechanical. When you have a problem, you can't pull codes, but generally, you won't need to. With a EFI controlled engine, if one of the sensors goes bad, there is a misfire, or anything will send the whole system down. Sometimes, it is difficult to figure out because the failure of one sensor will make it seem as though the rest of the system is whacked. EFI is also great when it comes to a mild build, but start adding heavy mods, such as a big cam, and then that drivability goes over to the carb'd advantage. Yes, you can get programming units and standalone computers, but that is expensive, and look at those who do, constantly fighting with the tune. Why do they call tuners, tuners? Because they spend all thier time tuning and on the dyno, while the hotrods are out cruising and racing.

What you should do is a function of what you intend to do with the car. A N/A strip car is an excellent choice for carb. An all weather daily driver is where EFI is best.

What will make or break the car is the quality of workmanship. Stunts like using the EFI fuel pump, and EFI distributor in a carb car speak of ignorance and sloppy workmanship. That kind of quality will qualify you for the Road Kill Mechanic award. A carb car needs a distributor and fuel system designed to run with a carb. Whatever route you take, do it right and don't cut corners.

Its my weekend car. NEVER a Daily driver. My playtoy basically. Itll be N/A for am onth or so until I get my Nitrous kit again.

I LOVE the idea of S/C's and turbo's but Ive kinda grown fond of the Spray. My plans later on down the road call for a 408W, big heads, rowdy cam and a carb (most likely).

What all wiring do I keep? Like what all do I need for gauges, starting, fuel, etc???

What Fuel Pump AND Regulator do YOU recommend? Im willing to change it but I dont want to run a whole new fuel system..maybe liek a Holley Black pump and a regulator on stock Fuel lines.....

Which distributor is cost effective AND works great?

What about accelerator cable?

If going carb you will need a accelerator cable from a 85 or earlier.

Distributor I went with a MSD part #8598. You will need a 6al or equivelant box to run it.

I went with the summit fuel kit for like $220 I think for all of the stuff you will need. You can buy a in take sump in summit to convert your fuelie gas tank to a carb setup. If I thinking right the stock lines are 5/16 and wont support alot of horsepower carbed (I think).

Basically, trace all the wires from the computer out and you dont need them.

OK, on distributor, Ill need something CHEAP....not looking for expensive sutff since Ill be oging with a 408 next year sometime.

as for fuel system, I NEED HELP HERE!!! thanks.

Distributor - Duraspark distributor & box from an 85 or earlier Ford or Mustang. Watch out for the distributor gear - if you are running a roller cam, you need a steel gear. The older distributors had cast iron gears. The same goes for the fuel system, 85 and earlier Mustangs have all the parts you need. The 3/8" tubing is what you need for a carb. You can remove the in tank EFI pump & fabricate a short tube with a filter sock on it for a fuel pick up. It will save you from having to weld a sump on the tank.

Use an electric pump & the red/green wire from the ignition switch that feeds the coil. Use a relay & feed the relay coil power wiring through the inertia switch so that it cuts off if you get rear ended in an accident.

If it's a weekend warrior, go with carb and since you plan on a 408 stroker with carb next year, might as well convert to carb now to get it over with...

I left my pump in the tank and just hooked up an in line fuel pump. Works great.
