I'm having some problems with getting caster set at 3 degrees positive on the right side of my car. The left side was done without any issue, however the right side is proving to be trouble.
I have these parts on the car, G/West tubular upper and lower arms, Cobra Automotive roller spring perches, OpenTracker adjustable strut rods, G/West 520# springs now trimmed one 1/4 of a coil lower, the Baer tracker bumpsteer kit, a recently installed lower eccentric kit, and Koni shocks.
I've set the left side tire with 1/2 degree of negative camber and 3 degrees of positive caster. The eccentric and adjustable strut rods made this very easy. When I started on the right side I set the camber and when I tried to set the caster found that the edge of the front tire comes in contact with the lip of the front fender as I approach the 3 degree setting. I started adding some shims to the front bolt of the upper arm in order to move the upper ball joint back to gain additional clearance. This required resetting the camber which I did. I rechecked the caster and still need more, I eventually had to remove the 3/8 thick plate behind the G/West arm to get the desired setting.
There is a difference of 3/16 of an inch between the front shim stack and the rear, even with this gross amount of shims, I can only get slightly more than 2 degrees without having the tire dangerously close to the lip on the fender.
Any tips of help with this dilemma? I was not at the shop for the drilling of the mounting holes of the arms but I'm beginning to think that the holes may be too far forward in the shock tower. This would explain the problems I'm having. I guess I could just go with the 2 degrees, but I'm concerned about the big difference between the stack of shims on the arm.
