Cat-back opinions

Hey guys...

I'm getting a little bored with my MAC cat-back (plus, it's rusting out and fits like crap). So I'm thinking about what I might replace it with. Three different options come to mind:

1. Magnaflow (not Magnapacks)
2. Spintech side exhaust
3. CDC side exhaust without the skirts (mufflers are Dynomax super turbos)

The Magnaflow & Spintech are about the same price ($435), the CDC is $500. I'm leaning towards the CDC, because the super turbos should be quiet, and then I can run my Dr. Gas X-pipe full time .

Opinions? I have never heard Spintech mufflers. And I don't know anybody with side exhaust -- but it sounds fun, and would make my panhard bar installation simpler...

I'd immediately forget about the side exhaust, just based on the fact that those twists and turns can't help performance.

I like my Magnaflows, however they are pretty loud with my Prochamber. I always thought they were quiet until I did my H/C/I.

How about Borla? It's very expensive, but they have one version that is extremely quiet and performs with the best of them.

I'm thinking that with the turn the pipe makes out of the muffler on the side-exhaust, it shouldn't be all that much different than the turn up over the axle when it's going out the rear. A lot of mufflers make turns inside the muffler irregardless of where the entry and exit is.

Besides, Joe, I no longer care about performance . I can't afford to care much about it, with AFR165's making 280 rwhp .

Id go with the Magnaflow myself. While I have heard that Spintechs are great, the Magnaflows will sound awesome with your H/C/I combo matched with the Dr. Gas x-pipe.

the muffler design behind the side exit is the same style as a C5 vette, so the design isnt all that bad

You could be right Dave. The only side exhaust I've ever seen in person came along the back of the side skirt, and instead of dumping right behind it, it did this weird twist to accommodate a muffler right before exiting the car. Weird. I can't remember who made it though...

I've heard some people say good things about the Spintechs, the only thing that worries me is the sound -- how loud are they? One nice thing about the Dynomax mufflers would be the ability to run my X-pipe without waking up the neighborhood when I start the car . (unlike some people, I actually don't like it really, really loud... ).

It's also such a simple idea, I wonder if I could do it myself. Pick up some generic mufflers with in/out on the same end that are the right size to fit, and then fabricate the tube that goes out the side... Might be cheaper than $500.

A little OT but how quickly did your Mac system start rusting? The reason i ask is because years ago a good friend of mine bought a Mac system for his 89lx and within six months the chrome on the tips had completed rusted and peeled off. He called Mac and sent them pictures of the tips and they sent him another set for free.
Assuming that he had a freak set i bought a catback system last year for my car. The mufflers, tailpipes, etc are looking ok still but the damn chrome tips are starting to get a heavy surface rust on them. I got most of it off, but it kills me how quickly these damn system start rusting.

Can't say -- the system was already installed when I bought the car in February 2003. Interestingly, the chrome on the outside of the tips seems to be fine -- it's the rest of the pipes that are rusting away. Makes me want stainless for my next catback.

well...based on my sig im sure you can figure what exhaust i would suggest....the side exhaust might be really cool....i havnt read anything about that brand...but i will after posting this...
