*Before reading this don't decide based on personal preferences about how your exhaust looks or if you do or don't think it looks great ^_^*

Okay I'm still a bit new to my 96 GT but I'm starting to get the hang of things. Long story short I bought her used and am now picking up the pieces to restore her back to greatness. I've already done some body work but one of my concerns is performance.......with that I want to do some exhaust work.....

*Don't flame me for this......*

Would it help or hurt the performance of my stang if I cut the catback and in a sense just run headers and a "dump off"? I'm sure this is going to be crazy loud and I know for certain that by state law (NC) I need a catback however with my rear O2 sensors turned off (SCT tuner) I don't see a purpose and I'd like to do something a bit different. I was thinking about buying a Spintech side exhaust kit but instead I don't want them to even be visible. So my question again is will this hurt or help performance wise??? Thanks and if all else goes right I'll take pics and post later.

are you wanting to run headers followed by just a straight pipe with not mufflers or tailpipes and making a turn down tip to act as a dumped exhaust or headers to a midpipe/straight pipes to a muffler then dump the exhaust right at the muffler?

if you're looking to just run no mufflers and dumped, yes it would be crazy loud, but it would also sound like total ass imo

if you ran mufflers dumped it would sound loud but it would actually have some kind of tone to it at least...running your muffler of choice then dumping them will actually sound bad ass :nice:

if you strictly run no mufflers you will actually lose hp and torque as well

It will actually hurt performance if you don't have some sort of crossover pipe to equalize exhaust pulses between each cylinder bank, as this wave motion actually helps to extract exhaust gas from the engine. I don't imagine you'd lose more than a couple HP, but why would you want to lose HP and have a car that sounds like chit.

If you do succeed in this venture, be sure to post pics in the REDNECK MUSTANG thread. :D

Whatever you do, please make sure you have some sort of crossover pipe in there and a pair of mufflers. X or H, and type of muffler doesn't really matter as it's all personal preference regarding sound. You car will sound awful without the crossover pipe though and will harm performance slightly, so keep that in mind.
