CDC Decklid Trim Panel

I purchased the CDC Decklid trim panel last weekend. I installed the panel per CDC's instructions, on Thursday. I go out today and take a look at the panel. And the double stick tape is begining to let go. The vertical sides are no longer sticking at all. The only parts of the tape that are holding the panel on are the middle part of both the top and the bottom. Has anyone else had this problem?

Here are my install steps. In order performed during install.

1. Remove faux gas cap emblem.

2. Wash car with Meguires.

3. Use Alchohol to remove any wax from trunk area.

4. Remove two inches of plastic from double stick tape.

5. Align panel to car.

6. Remove plastic from tape, while pressing panel FIRMLY to body of car.

Added this step myself when tape did not seem to be sticking, on the sides of the panel.

7. Apply plastic trim clamps to hold panel to car for 16 hours.

These steps were preformed outside. The temp outside was 103, and the was no rain.

--Has anyone else had this problem?
--Does anyone have any advice?

FYI-If you try to remove the panel it will not come off, but the sides of the panel do move freely.

sounds like crappy tape. some companies try to cut corners and use cheap tape. replace with 3M tape with red backing and you should be good.

CDC uses the 3M tape with the red plastic backing.

is it oeeling from the car, or from the part? if its the part, its their fault. if its the car, its your fault. double sided tape is very picky when it comes to surface prep, and you may have accidentally contaminated the surface in one of the steps.

Peeling from the car. I can assure you that I did not contaminate the surface after washing, and applying the alchohol. I am wondering if I should just remove the panel and try to re apply it to the trunk? We can I purchase red plastic 3M tape, like what is used in the kit?

did the part fit nice and tight before you peeled off the tape? you did test fit it, didnt you?

about the only fix is to remove it from the car, peel off all the old tape, clean it up, apply adhesion promoter to the new part, reapply the tape and try again.

I have the cdc decklid trim panel as well, and the black looking tape with the red backing that it comes with is not 3m, and that stuff sucks. I did the same install as you with the plastic clamps and everything and after a week the corners of the trim panel started coming off the car. I went and bought some real 3m silicone tape it has a red backing but is a grey color tape, not black. Worked like a charm, 3 month since then and that sucker is still on there good.

Yes, I did test fit the part. LOL, for ten minutes. I am somewhat of a perfectionist. The panel fit great.

I am just not looking forward to redoing the whole thing. Someone should say something to CDC.

lightblade, where did you get the tape? If you don't mind me asking?

Either advanced auto, or autozone. Its called Slicone bonding tape or something like that, redbacking, grey color tape

I followed the same prep routine for the SHR honeycomb rear panel as I did for my stripe install.
-Washed the area and then cleaned it 10x with rubbing alcohol using a clean cloth everytime.
Mine has been on since April and has never started coming loose.

Count yourself lucky then. I wonder if the SHR panel is thinner/lighter/more plyable than the one offered from CDC. Either that or they offer better tape than CDC does. Either way, I am glade that you did not have this problem.

I've had problems with my CDC panel. It keeps losing the shape and popping up on the sides when wet. CDC has GREAT customer service though and helped me replace it no problem, but the bad news is that its still doing it. I even pulled it off, striped the tape, and re did the whole thing with 3m. It was a pain and helped for like 2 days.

I'm almost positive, as I stated earlier, that CDC does NOT use 3M tape. My bodyshop pulled the same crap when they installed the rear valence for my Cervini's kit, and now it's coming loose.

I picked up 3M tape at Walmart in the automotive trim/accessories department, but pretty much anywhere carries it. It must be 3M. Prep it right and it'll last until you try to remove it.

I dunno, my CDC chin spoiler has been holding fine and it's using the same tape you guys describe.

To the original poster I'd suggest contacting CDC for advice but it sounds like you did it all right. If you dead end get some better tape.

And yeah my SHR panel has been rock solid since installed too.

I have the SHR panel. Looks great and no problems. I actually had one on the Mustang I traded in on the GT I now own. I was going to remove it but couldn't get it off. That's how well it was stuck. 3M tape is the best and can be found most anywhere.
I also used a chemical wax remover. Prepsol is one brand name. You can get it at most auto parts stores that sell auto paint, body supplies.
