Center Console?

I hate the look of the bench style front seats so I was wondering if it was possible to install a center console and still be able to drive a stick in say a '66? Thanks for your help and sorry about the dumb question.

Hey, it's great to see people overseas interested in the classic Mustang!

All years of Mustangs were available with buckets, console and a floor shifter. So yes it is possible. The bench seat is actually somewhat rare, I believe.

Hump hugger is an aftermarket console manufacturer - probably a cheaper option than finding a factory unit. Or you could make your own console or look for something in a junkyard that will fit.

If I understand correctly, you want to put a console on your bench seat to give it the bucket seat look? If so, that's a neat idea and certainly easier and cheaper than removing the bench to replace it with buckets.

Aftermarket Consoles?

Is it safe to assume that no one makes an aftermarket console that is a copy of the original Ford part? I've looked around the usual vendors, but didn't see anything like that. I'm not a big fan of the Humphugger consoles and would like an original even if it's a reproduction...

There are plenty out there that sell what you are looking for. However, look to pay big bucks. If you piece together a center console with all the trim and what not, It could get up into the $350+ range.


Just make your own...thats what im doing

My 66 3 speed manual doesn't have a centre console either, and I want one, but I too priced it up and once you add in the shipping to the UK it's just crazy money.

Over here we have quite a few breakers yards that carry classic Mustangs (what's left of 'em), but things like consoles go very quickly. Is there anything like that in Japan, that maybe you could get hold of and restore?

That looks great. I'm sure I could manage steps 1 through 3 without too much trouble... however I'd need a lot more assistance going from picture 3 to picture 4.

I've never really done any kind of vinyl covering before...

I didn't do 3 to 4 either. The local occupational college had an auto upholstery class. They did my front and rear seats and center console. All it costs is the materials and a $5 service fee for each item.

mine is a little different. Rather than being covered with vinyl...mine is covered with several layers of fiberglass. Then painted to match the car.

I am staioned in Japan and will be returning to the states soon. I'm applying for a special duty in San Antonio so I will buying a Stang there. Well anyway the car is going to have bucket seats and I am kind of intrigued on the whole "do-it-yourself" thing. Where woudl be a good place to start looking for parts to do this??? The jinukard? Let me know please. Thanks for your help guys.

That console is just too cool!

I think the key to your success is the seats
and console being covered to match.
If you used stock seats
and covered the console seperately,
I think it would not look nearly as good.

I got my prices from all over the place - we have several Mustang specialists here in the UK, which is helpful, but you pay a little extra because they are carrying the hassle for imorting the stuff. I've looked at Mustangs Plus (bad reveiws from others elsewhere on this forum), Florida Mustang (served me well so far), California Mustang, NPD, etc. etc.

Just search the web, some are cheaper on some parts, others on other parts, but once you cost in the shipping, you'll be buying some plywood and vinyl...

That's a damn good diy console.

jeez guys, is there any type of template for those custom consoles? and what was the total costs in materials?
you can buy those ones for like 90 dollars from mustang parts dealers, if it's cheaper than that to make one i'm sold

The console can definitely be made for less than $90. I have some scrap 3/8" plywood, $0.52 cup holders (subwoofer ports - ingenious), $10 - $20 for some high quality vinyl and foam, add to that couple of bucks for a hinge and $10 more for bondo and miscellaneous and you are set.

I think I just talked myself into another weekend project.

As far as templates are concerned, start with some cardboard.

cool dude, i think i'll make one too. i wish there was a template to cut the wood and stuff, i aint good at working with wood. I might have to wait for my dad to come home, he's a wood expert
