Check the shift stops in your shifter.

Good luck.

Sounds like the clutch isn't being fully disengaged. pull up on your clutch pedal to ratchet the adjuster.

try getting an adjustable clutch cable and/or a firewall adjuster. I agree with True 5.0 that it sounds like the clutch isn't fully disengaging.

i have an adjustable cable and firewall adjuster. If the clutch wasn't being fully disengaged it wouldnt be just 2nd and 4th it would be all the gears... any other ideas???

Some things to try to help make a diagnosis:
1. Try double clutching. In days before synchros this was the meathod used to shift gears. This will rule in or out the synchros.

2. If the synchros seem OK, try to shift without using the clutch. I used to drive a truck and learned this technique. The cluch was only used for 1st and reverse. I've used this technique in my Mustang and i know it works. Start off in 1st and when you would normally shift, just take your foot off of the gas and at the same time gently pull the shifter to the 2nd gear position. Don't ram it into gear, just lightly pull back on the shifter. When the engine RPM's match the 2nd gear tranny RPM's, the shfter will pop into 2nd. Hit the gas and repeat for 3rd and 4th. If this works, your clutch is out of adjustment or AFU'd.

3. If neither one of these work, your shifter is out of adjustment or your tranny internals are probably messed up. ie bent forks

"I believe 2nd and 4th are connected in linkage. Did you drop your transmission or tilt it back/forward or jar the transmission?? There is a linkage, that if it shifts forward, you won't be able to shift.

Very simple fix. You take off the top cover, and slide the linkage forward, I believe.

If this is the case, I'll try to find a picture for you...however, it does require taking out the transmission.

I had this happen to my TKO during shipping. Its the only thing I can think of if everything else is set properly"

Has anyone ever heard of this.... it would make sense but im not too sure that 2nd and 4th are connected...

Try adjusting teh FWA to the other end of the spectrum... It does sound like it is not fully disengaging aince now it grinds into 4 of the 6 total gears...

I'm bringing this thread back... I still have not found the problem.. now the weather is getting nice and i want to fix it... It is only 2nd and 4th gear.... everything was fine b4 the clutch swap... Are 2nd and 4th connected some how... I am ready to just get a new tranny but i dont understand why they would just stop working after a clutch change???
