Ok got all the crap to fix my smoking problem at startup this week and just had a question for you guys. I need to change the valve stem seals on my 90 model LX 5.0L just wondering if im going about this the right way and correct me if im wrong on the process please. To change the valve stem seals i need to just pop the valve cover off and get cylinders 1 and 4 to TDC then get a valve spring compressor and take the springs off and rep the seal then reassemble then rinse and repeat for rest of the cylinders? Or am i forgetting a step in there somewhere Im gonna try to get them changed tomorrow while im fixing the rag joint on the car and ill have the tools there at the shop to do it with so wanna kill two birds with one stone. So if anyone can gimme a step by step or if im on the right track lemme know, and yes you can talk to me like your explaining this to a 2 year old lol.

NO! You need to do somethin to keep the valve from dropping into the cylinder. There are fittings that screw into the plug hole so you can use compressed air, or I usually just feed enough rope into the hole and then turn the motor over by hand till its tight. I usually take a socket thats JUST clears the keepers on top of the valve spring and give it a couple whacks with a hammer to loosen them up. Compress the spring and use a magnet to get the keepers out and itll all come apart real easy! I always dipped the new seals in oil before puttin em on, messy but Ive always had good success this way. Be preppared for it to take a little time but its not TOO hard. Good luck and have fun!
