Charcoal cannister?

I found a bad vacuum line running from the charcoal cannister to the manifold. I capped the nipple on the manifold and plugged the line running from the cannister. I've been thinking this may not be the best idea. Is it possible that with no way to release the pressure from the gas tank, the tank could possibly explode or something awful like that?

What should I do in my situation? I would just replace the line except that the nipple on the manifold is much bigger than the nipple on the cannister, so I would need some sort of expanding hose. I have already removed my smog pump, and I have no problems removing the cannister, if you guys think that would be a good idea.

The canister runs back to the gas tank on top where there is a vent tube. I have asked this question before and was told to put a breather filter there so the gas tank can vent pressures but fumes won't escape.

Where is the best place to get a breather filter...? And would disconnecting the electrical connector throw a check engine light?

I removed mine years ago. There is a hard plastic line coming into the engine bay behind the pass. side strut tower. That line is the tank vent, I cut it off short and stuffed it in the fender. Some put a filter on that line to keep trash out of the tank. Your car isnt going to blow up

I have parked mine in the garage for days and had no fumes in there either. I sent my old canister to a guy who said his was making fumes in the garage without it, dont know if it fixed his problem or not.

You'd be MUCH better off reconnecting the vacuum line. Go to the parts store with both your caps. Buy two pieces of hose in the right size, and a plastic reducer fitting - they're in the vacuum fittings section. The whole thing will cost you less than $5. You want to vent the gas tank - very important - think about it. And there's no performance benefit at all to removing the charcoal cannister; it doesn't weigh enough to worry about. Even if you vent the tank, people often complain of the smell of gasoline - because of the open venting. Hook it back up.

When I got my 89, I found that line just hanging. Ended up hooking it to the GT40 intake near the EGR spacer.
