I dont have that much knowhow about buying parts for cheap.
Its usaly see it, Looks good, buy it.

Well i need a good 9inch rear end that will hold on the 400 ponys rushing at it
well not 400 ponys directly at it some where around 280-300hp.
also would the stock rear pull this kind of hp

A well built 8 with aftermarket parts can hold UP TO 400fwhp (give or take). If you are under 300fwhp then you really don't need the 9 IMO. A better use of your money would be a high-strength carrier and a locker for your 8. Spend the extra cash on brakes.

The 8.8 rears from newer Fox Mustangs are the cheapest 9 inch substitute. Probably cheaper to buy an 8.8 with traction loc and gears then to buy a locker for your 8 inch rear, even. An 8.8 will be plenty strong for what you are doing as well.

Then you can buy rear wheels with a modern backspacing, which are also typically cheaper than classic Mustang wheels.

Hack, I agree with what you wrote. But don't forget there are fabrication costs to the swap (spring perches welded on and suspension mount-points cut off), and offset pinions may cause issues for some folks too. But the 8.8s usually come with disc brakes too, one more point to consider.
