Check engine light ? on a 88 lx 5.0

I am looking to buy this 88 LX 5.0 hatch and the car will not pass smog inspection because the check engine light does'nt come on with the ignition turned on to run position, THe light comes on when the car is cranked and goes off when it starts but thats not right according to CA smog shops. So what could be wrong? The car passes emmisions testing just fine, So this is the only problem.

ha ha lol the 88 5.0 does not have a check engine light. the indicator is physically in the gauge cluster but there is no bulb or wire for it untill 89. Tell those punks at the emmisions place to get a clue . The computer has no suport for it.

There is NO check engine light on the 86-88 speed density cars. The spot is in the cluster but there is no bulb there. Even if you put a bulb in there it will not night. If you convert to Mass Air there is a way to get it working again.

Anyway your smog shops are stupid. Print this out and show em that i said that. STUPID!!!!!!!

CA? 88? It should be mass air which means it has a check engine light.

Ya thats exactly what I thought, The car is from Virgina, but registered and smogged here in California. So I guess I should contact ford about this?

Well, if it's not originally a CA car it won't have a CE light or mass air.

Its a speed density car, Its not mass air. So the smog shop was WRONG, and should validate the smog from calling ford - I called ford and thay said some 88's came with the ce light and some did not. So ford said for the smog shop to call them, Stupid asian smog shop !

dont tell us u took ur mustang to an asian ricer speed shop for smog testing?

Well I guess so being it rice city here in San Diego, Where I live is like a ricer community with the "races" with like over 500 rice burners usally. I went to a white guys smog shop and he did'nt know about the check engine light, and another shop that did not know, I am going to have to be there teacher !
