check engine light

can taking a chip out and running w/out it, make your check engine light come on?

as of friday, my diablo chip was removed for reprograming and I've had to drive w/out it till later on this week. didn't notice any change friday, sat or sunday, but this morning, my "service engine soon" light came on. could it be chip related? oh, btw, i do have an X-pipe, but it has cats on it.

Try resetting the computer by disconnecting your battery for 15-20 minutes.

yes they can. Could be your x pipe or the CAI. Probably some code regaurding lean detection or the O2 sensors. Just guessing.

OK guys!! i went to auto zone and had them scan it for me.. this is what they come up with:

"Code P0420---The PCM has determined that ethe catalyst system efficience for bank 1 is below the threshold for the curren engine operating conditions."

"Code P0430---The PCM has determined that ethe catalyst system efficience for bank 2 is below the threshold for the curren engine operating conditions."

all this means what?

The Cats arent operating right I think. Time for a Off road pipe .


Wasnt there a problem with the Bassani CATs on their mid-pipes?

Sounds like the aftermarket X-pipe is screwing with the PCM. Some catted midpipes will still throw a code, Nothing fatal.....

Did you try resetting the PCM yet? If you didn't, try it and see if the engine light comes on again. If it does, make sure that your chip gets programmed to have the rear O2 sensord turned off, Although I suspect that the chip was already programmed that way.

so what would happen if i gutted the cats??

in order to get the check engine light off, could they program that on my chip?? or do have to get something different to turn it off??

How long had you had the X-Pipe on?
It's odd that all of a sudden this would be a problem?
I would bet it's all to do witht he Chip??
Did you get the chip back yet or are you still driving it with out the chip?
The system might be running the way the chip told it to and it takes like 100 miles for the stock system to relearn the current set up?
that's what My thoughts are?

1. You can have the chip programmed to shut your rear Oxygen sensors off.

2. You can buy MIL eliminators, which plug into the Oxygen sensor wiring harness.

Both of these options will elminate the Check engine light. Since you having the chip reprogramed anyway, why spend the $$$ on MIL's

ok, i'm confused! sorry,.. i know i'm frusturating.
so, are my cats bad?? OR is the light coming on b/c the stock computer doesnt like the cats that's on the x-pipe?? when they give me my chip back, will it go off??

i dont want to gut my cats if they're still good. you know?

It will probably go off when you get your chip back. The ECU doesnt like the reading it is getting from the aftermarket cats or it could be the cats have gone bad.

Yes...

The code states Catylitic efficency is below threshold. An aftermarket catted midpipe has only 1 cat per side as opposed to 2-3 cats per side on the stock h pipe. I'm sure the single cat is not quite as efficent as multiple factory cats, hence the code and check engine light. There is no need to gut the cats

threshold usually refers to the operating temperature , sounds like you either have a small leak (heat escaping) , or your exhaust is doing a really really good job of scavenging the heat , which is not allowing the cats to get hot enough to properly operate , or so the PCM thinks anyway . did it say the reading was coming from the front or the rear O2s ??

Isn't the X after the cats? So wouldn't they still reach proper temp? Also, if you have an older Bassani X (with CATCO Cats) the cats could just have crapped out.
