Had been feeling a small vibration in the engine lately. Looked around last night and noticed this:

I used to go through a balancer every year. I don't think they stock ones liked the RPM. I was replacing mine with old used ones and that could have been part of my problem also. I swapped to an Aftermarked one and haven't had any problems since.


Good to see you caught this before it came clear apart!

Yes ... higher rpm's can kill the OEM hb :Word:

I lost mine

after some high rpm datalogging working on my WOT fuel ratio

you're lucky jon, mine decided to come apart while i was driving (right as i came home thankfully) and it gashed a hole in the timing chain cover.

If you wanna go to a really nice SFI hb

I have been real happy with my Pioneer pn 872030

No install hassles like with Romac
No spacer needed also

A quality part for sure

I been running one since early 2003 with no probs
and
I spin it up to just a bit more than 6K on occasions too

I run a professional products balancer on mine.

Cheap and SFI approved. Seems to work ok.

I've been using it for 3 or 4 years now without any problems.

AFAIK, even non-fluid SFI balancers use an elastomer. They tend to have a better build-quality (better method of elastomer introduction - not press fit). The rings are indexed and even secured together with additional means.

There still should be an elastomer in there though.

x2 - when I went 331 my builder included a balancer in the engine build. It's not a Pioneer and I wish I had one like I did on my 302. I had to use a spacer on the one I have now. The spacer is rated as high as the balancer, so what's the point.

I mine didnt come all teh way apart but it messed up my timing chain cover a bit. Its not bad enough where I need to change it now, but soon as I rebuild, Ill buy a new one.

Just out of curiosity, will a balancer from a 90 5.0 work in the meantime while Im waiting for my tax returns? Im assuming yes but it doesnt hurt to ask.

I had a Romac on my previous Mustang, not sure which kind is on my Cobra but Im pretty sure its not OEM.

I had a 87 5.0 balancer on mine.

It works.
