checking piston to valve clearance

Does anyone have a trick to check piston to valve clearance with out taking the heads off? Im now bored and want more power and friend just gave me a nice cam for free. Thanks

I think someone mentioned some sort of clay? I don't know though...

without taking the heads off.... hmmm... how could you use clay without taking off the head?? i'm stuck on this one

you cant use clay without takeing the heads off

there is one way to do it but not really feasable with the engine in car, easier to pull the heads but you can

use compressed air to pressureise the cylinder, replace valve spring with a light spring, use a dial indicator on the valve and rotate crankshaft slightly push rocker down see howe far dial indicator moved, slightly move crank cheack again lol ;D you'll be there awhile =O

normally you use this method with engine out and after you degree the cam, piston to valve clearance will be closest at +30 to -30 degrees from tdc, but without degreeing the cam, you'l be there awhile
