It depends how bad the leak is, but usually a minor leak won't prevent it from starting. What is the story with how you came to this problem?
Well at first I thought I was flooding my carburetor when I couldn't find any side effects of that I had to turn to other possible explainations. I was told that this might be another possible problem. Because the car tries to start but it just won't. It sounds like it almost starts but then dies.

Sorry, I had to go and think about how to approach this.
Starter fluid comes in a spray can. You spray a bit into the intake system of hard to start engines via the carb or air inlet. It is usually used only as a tool to diagnose the problem and not as a new permanent starting routine as it is very volatile and if used incorrectly can cause severe damage to the engine.

We need you to tell us the history of the problem. Was the car running before and what have you done since? You are obviously very inexperienced so something you may not think is important may in fact be crucial to getting your car running. Does the battery have enough juice to turn it over at a good rate? Do you have spark and how did you check it? Is the firing order correct? What exactly did you do to the carb when you were trying to rule it out as a problem?
ok yes it was running before but it sat with gas in the carb so I was told by one of my mechanics told me that i should clean it because it may have gotten gunk from the gas just sitting so I got some new gaskets and did what they said I took it apart let it soak in some carb cleaner and then let it dry for a couple of hours so I did and let it sit overnight before I put it back together and back on the car new gasket and everything and it helped alot but it still didn't start. So I got the #1 cylinder to top dead center reset the distributor and after I did that it started for a few seconds (like 1 or 2 seconds at most) thats when I was told that i could be flooding the carb so he told me to start it and then look inside the carb for any standing gas inside the carb there wasn't then he said that the needle valve could be gunked up so then I cleaned that out and nothing changed it tried to start but just didn't. the battery is fully charged and like I said it sounds like its trying to start but it just doesn't. And I don't know why. Does that help? And I appreciate all the help that you are giving me.
My car has a simliar problem sometimes. Close the choke all the way. Try and start it. It will crank but immediatly die. Open it a little bit. It should start. Let it run for a sec, then open it fully. Keep in mind, we may have different problems but the symptoms sound the same. Its worth a shot if you havnt tried it already.

How long did the car sit with gas in the gas tank?
