Is it normal for these to cause a slight bit of detonation when installed? I know the programmers come with a preset tune from the company, but what are they setting the timing at? my programmer calls for 93 octane but we dont have it (only 92) and I know every state doesnt have 93 either. What are u guys/gals doing to increase octane and stop the detonation?
It doesnt ping all the time though and I wonder what the heck is going on!

Absolutely not - a good tune will maximize power without any detonation. If you're detonating there is something wrong. The difference between 92 & 93 should not cause detonation unless you're already running on the ragged edge.

Too lean, too much timing, something isn't right - time to put it on a dyno with a/f and figure it out.

I just got the Predator and it says if you dont have 93, set back the spark advance 10 % or more.....i would think yours has an answer to that seemingly common prob.

BTW, i love the predator!! If anything, i get a mean 1st to 2nd chirp with no other mods...and the ability to turn off traction control is great!!

Yep, that's increased timing that's causing that. Try running a bottle of octane boost for the short term fix, but I don't think you'd want to live this way. Contact Hypertech for long term fix.
Pinging is not good!!!

I will give them a call monday. Being a police officer here in HI we get free gas and it's suppose to be 92 oct. Ive heard that the dept. buys the cheapest 92 oct they can find to provide us with, confirmed by my co workers, and this might be the problem. Like I said, sometimes it pings and sometimes it doesnt, go figure or maybe mix some race gas in it. .

Fuel with 91 octane is the highest available in CA. I previously contacted Hypertech and they said their 93 octane tune would probably cause pinging with 91 octane fuel. So instead, I selected the Diablo Predator programmer, which allows you to adjust the spark advance.

If you only have access to low quality 92 octane fuel, perhaps see if you could get a refund from Hypertech and get a Diablo Predator.

When I used my Superchip Micro Tuner it never detonated on 93 octane or even 91 octane, but when I used my current Hypertech programmer it pinged the 1st time I went WOT with 93 octane...but since that 1st time the *ping* hasn't returned.

if its detonating it could be the cheap fuel, but it might be running lean. make sure they programmed it right. if it runs too lean you dont want to fry a piston.

There is no reason what-so-ever that you should have any detonation with your list of mods.
