What is the story on the chrome trim around the wheels? why do the black and gold cobra ii's have the chrome and not the white with blue (or at least mine), etc. what was the cut-off? what was the factory default for the cobra's..with or without?
My guess is that the trim was not intended for the Cobra package. Actually, when I saw that pic, it was the first thing that caught my eye, and I don't recall seeing the trim around the wells on any Cobra II or King Cobra before.
Of course, you could factory order a car with whatever options were available, and there were a lot of them. It's also possible that when somebody restored their car, they added them, or even cloned a 2+2 that already came with them. Take a look at old stock photos, and you'll see you aren't missing any original equipment.
BTW, you could also get a chrome rocker panel molding (chip guard) from the factory for a II.
Jon,
The chrome trim on the wheel wells (or rocker panels) was not an option on the Cobras. It was available on Mach 1's, cars with sports package, and all other regular models.
The picture is interesting, in that there are two Cobras with this trim, side by side. But, two "wrongs" still never made a "right"... last I recall!
Jon, if you look at the 76 Black and Gold Ford info on the Tech section of the .net site, it shows no trim on the pics of the car, and it specifically states that option is NOT available on the Cobra package.
