Chrome peeling on chrome wheels???

How often does this happen? I have a set of(17x9,17x10.5) silver Cobra Rs now. I decided to get silver cause at the time I read some people that had that problem with chrome rims and I did not want to deal with that. So now(after looking at some cars with chrome rims) I'm tempted to sell my silver rims and get chrome ones but I would like to know how often or what causes peeling of the chrome finish?
Keep in mind that I do not want to deal with that problem.
So should I keep my silver ones or should I sell them and get chrome ones??? Thanks for you input!

If you are worried about peeling, just get some polished rims. My guess to peeling would be from rock chips, then the aluminum starts to corode and the chrome plating starts to peel. I don't know if you could put a percentage on how often this happens. Good luck.

If you take care of them and always have a good coat of wax on them then you shouldn't have too many problems if any. Sometimes people just get wheels that were not properly chrome plated or just luck of the draw that they have a wheel with chrome plating comming off. you get what you pay for.

Thanks guys. I don't want to get polish ones cause of all the work you need to do to make them shine and the possible pitting they get if you don't clean them regularly. Could I get them powercoated? If I can, can they powdercoat them in a chrome finish? How much would it cost. Thanks again.

yes you can get them powder coated, Im not sure of the cost. I just bought a set of Chrome Steeda Ultra Lite II's, considering the cost and reputation of steeda I dont see them pitting or peeling as long as I take good care of them and belive me I will they wernt cheap.

Even when they do start peeling (which my old ones did), it usually doesn't look THAT bad unless you enter a lot of car shows. Most people couldn't tell my wheels were peeling-i had to point it out to them. And they didn't peel much at ALL in three years' worth of driving (maybe 1/2" square). Besides, if you really don't like the peeling, you can get them re-chromed for a couple hundred bucks, or just buy a single wheel off someone.

The point is that chrome looks awesome if you like bling, and you could drive with them for years and they'll still look good even with a little peeling in a spot or two. On the other hand, if you polish the wheels, a nice clearcoat keeps them shiny and all you have to do is wash/wax like the rest of your car.

powder coat chrome is not worth the effort in my opinion. There is no way to replacate the depth of chrome. I've seen powder coat chrom and it's looks sorda like the coating they put on headers. it you want the chrome look, buy chrome. no way around it. next closest is polish but since you have to do about teh same amount of upkeep, chrome isn't a bad choice.
