cigarette kill switch to starter?

Good morning people ' today is going to be a sunny & warm day so i thought about installing a kill switch through my starter' has anyone attempted this ' and is it a simple prosess' i need to know the proper steps to do it and what gage of wire i should be using ' the reason i would like to install 1 is because i dont live in the best area and theres alot of crime around here and am worried that some 1 might end up taking my baby away from me ' the way i would like to install this is from the ciggarette lighter in the middle console so when the lighter is pushed in the car will start and when there is no ligher in it wont start. any info would be greatly appreciated ! ty
 
That would be pretty trick, but what happens if you lose the lighter?

A simple switch may be better. You just have to hide it in the car...



If you stick with the lighter idea, let us know how it works out...

do you want the lighter to be functional? if not this is what i did in the past. drill a hole in the bottom of the lighter, intsall a momentary push button switch, this way if you lose the lighter you can use your finger to push it in. you dont need a heavy wire being it just the signal wire for the solenoid you will be working with,
 
The ligter does not have to be functional but might be a good idea if it does get lost ' but i found an old plug in from my radar detector that i might use' im no electritian , would it be to much for some 1 to draw a diagram for such a set up when i lifted up the middle console this is what i saw http://img156.imageshack.us/img156/9043/picture023sa3.jpg i will eventually figure it out it just a matter of to where to hook all this up to.
 
You could also put a kill switch in the headlight switch like a friend of mine did. It was very simple.

He got a GT headlight switch and swapped the stickers from his switch....so the GT switch looks like yours does now. Then he cut the clutch interrupt switch wire and extended it with two female connectors. He ran both ends of the cut wire up behind the cluster and through the hole where the headlight switch goes, then just connected either side to to the two prongs in the foglight switch. So when you are in the car you have to hold in the clutch like normal, but if you don't push in the foglight switch, the car will not start. This works great because you don't have to leave it pushed in after you start the car, you can pull it back out.

Granted it might not be the best switch in the world, because if anybody watches you it is pretty obvious what you are doing....but it works nonetheless....and it is easy to do.

You can also find the fuel pump lead and run it to a toggle switch that you hide in the rear ashtray for added security. You could leave that on most of the time, just switch it off when you are going to leave it overnight or for long parks.
 
This is a very good idea. I have a simple switch and without it the car won't start but it's not in the most convenient location. It would be nice to disable it from the driver's seat before i get out.

joeyd has a great idea. If you could find a start button from another vehicle like a new totalled vette, nissan maxima, etc...

You could basically cut and extend the clutch intterupt switch and run it to the cig lighter. That way the connection is not completed until you push in the lighter.
 
i dont suggest using the old radar plug, reason being, you will have to isolate the lighter from ground, put a push button in there, safe off the power wire (center prong of the lighter) and the ground female connector that is not insulated.
find the white/pink coming off the igniton switch, cut it, attach one end to the push button switch terminal, and from the other terminal of the push button switch connect it to the other end of the wire you cut. should be it, kinda like installing a ignition kill for a alarm. ford uses 18ga wire for starter solenoid, so dont go smaller than that, good luck
also keep in mind the starter can be jumped very easily from the soleniod. and it will bypass any cutoff from the solenoid back. i suggest using a switch and relay and kill the fuel relay under the seat,,,,,,,
 
That brings up a question.

If you were to simply cut the trigger wire to the fuel pump relay and run a toggle switch to it, would you need to run an extra relay? I figured just putting a toggle switch inline with the trigger wire running to the relay would work.
 
you can put a toggle in line with the trigger wire to the relay, but if you want to use a existing switch you need a relay. i once did a mustang that you had to push the unlock button te engage the fuel pump relay, it was a latching relay. i used to love doing alarms back in the day,
 
My idea has always been to wire up a hidden start button somewhere (the bottom of the cig lighter for instance) so that you have to put the key in, turn it to ON then push the button. However, here's the trick. Take the wires from the "START" position on the ignition switch and wire them to a fuse somewhere in the ignition system so that if the key is put to "START" it'll short, blowing that fuse and preventing the car from starting.

I was thinking of puttin a switch into the white unlock button to take the key out under the collumn, I liked it since you could do it without anyone seeing you do it. I also really like the foglight idea tho, esp since i dont use mine. Right now I have a switch although its kind of obvious, but i just tapped into the red wire with a white stripe i think and put in my switch, i put in two so even if the other was figured out i put another one hidden so if thats off it wont start from inside...

Best idea tho is for the fuel pump or an MSD box (white wire I believe), since u can just jump the starter, not really the fuel pump or spark
