Hello and Thanks for taking the time to read my Thread. Im new to this website and find it full of useful resources.

Anyway, I have been Restomodding a 1966 Mustang Coupe for the last 3 years, I have just completed all of my suspension upgrades. But in order to get it on the road, I have to complete my headers and a flowmaster system of some kind. Now for my ?. I use to have a 90 lx notch-back that was very heavily modified for the track. It had the most aggressive sound for such a small block 302. I sold it to make this purchase, However, does anyone know what a 289cu. in. V8 sounds like with headers and 2 1/2 in. exhaust. And if so, what recommendations do you all have. I want to do this right. Id prefer the louder the better(not Cherry Bomb sound) Im trying to mimic the sound of the way mustangs sound today with flowmaster 2 chamber muffs with off road H-pipes. Do you think they would sound remotely close? Any info would help. Id like to hear someones car to if I could. Id appreciate it.

Thanks and keep mustanging.

If you're asking if a 289 will sound like a modular 4.6 motor, it won't. They're just two competely different engines. One is an OHV motor (289), the other is OHC (4.6).

But if you're running a 289 with bolt ons, go with 2.25 inch exhaust. You dont need 2.5 inch. You'll just sacrifice torque.

I have a 289 with 2.25 inch exhaust running out of headers into 2 chamber flows. There is alot of drone. If you REALLY want loud, go with 40 series flows. I'm using 40 series delta flows, which has extra baffles in it to cut down on the noise a bit. But i still set off car alarms.

Exhaust is one of those things where unless you know someone with the exact setup you have, you're just gonna have to take a risk and hope that what you put on is what you want.

There is only one way to find out. you have headers and mufflers already, might as well put them on and see what they sound like!

i Had Tri Y headers, 2.5" straight piping to 2 chamber flow masters on a late model carb'd 302 in my 66...it did NOT sound like a late model fox chassis car. Hope that helps.

This is close to the sound I want

Here is a link from Mustangexhausts.com for a video with Magnaflows vs. Magnapacks. I love the way the Magnapacks sound and this is what I would like to come close to with my 66 Mustang. I have a late model 302 as well and I know it will sound different but I was hoping one of you out there could tell me how much different the sound will be on my car as opposed to the video? Please let me know.

IMO, and from what i seen, or should i seen heard? :

if you know what your doing and you do it right you can make a 289 sound better/louder than a 427. i'm honestly not sure why this is, it could because of the bore:stroke ratio, or mabey because of the great vilocity - either way some 289s have fooled me big time into thinking that they arn't big blocks. i got a sound of the MEANEST 289 you'll ever hear, but i don't know where to upload it.

there is NO way you will REALLY know until you actually do it!

I HAD a clip of my ol fox chassis....stock cam, with an american thunder cat back and offroad H pipe...sounded like it had a HUGE lope in it.....it was great.
