clay for valve clearance

I thought I would clay the heads to check for clearance and the clay was barly touched....i have keith black flat top pistons and a comp cam with .579 lift running 1.7 RR. the pistons support lift op to .600 lift but it just seemed weird that I got no touch. I had about 1/8 inch of clay in there. any ideas?

It sounds like you are good then. You didn't have gaskets between the heads and block did you? Did you make sure you have the right size push rods?

I would think that he'd want the head gasket in there and have the head bolts torqued to a certain percent of final torque. Trick flow says 30 ft-lbs. Of course, if you didn't have a HG in there and got those results, even better!

Only other thing I can think of is solid mock-up lifters...did you use these? I was told on here that if not, your results could be off anywhere from .020" to .060".

ahhhh....ya the lifters were callapsed...thats why.....thanks for the ideas

The only true way is to use a solid lifter, If you dont use one it will be incorrect, if its hydralic roller, then you need to modify a old lifter by simply spot welding the lifter. Its cheaper and easier than finding a solid roller to use.

You can disassemble a stock lifter, pull out the plunger ans stack #10 washers inside, then put it back togeather. Now it's going to act like a solid lifter.
