Assumming I have a piece of metal polished with metal polish, to really bring out the shine, is it safe to use clearcoat (such as the kind in a spray can from the store) to protect the metal from corrosion and rust? Thanks...Sean.

Are we talking about just a piece of metal, or a whole car? ecause the piece of metal would probably be fine, but the whole car would not.

The spray can stuff usually turns bare metal a yellowish color whenever i've tried it. It could be that I didn't use good quality stuff, or it could just be the way it is with spray paint -- not sure, I don't remember what I was trying it on.

Anyway, it is possible to do, either through powdercoating or some other painting process, but I don't think spray cans are the way to go.

so do I just have to keep polishing the metal to avoid anymore rust? The piece I"m talking about is the ashtray in my car, it always starts rusting, so i polished it but I don't want it to start rusting again.
