I have a 02 5 Spd. I was wondering if anybody elses car does this and if its normal or something wrong with mine. You know when you are driving really slow in 1st gear, almost to the point to where its going to die, so the car starts bucking. Mine clunks really loud, over and over in sync with the bucking, as soon as i push in the clutch, the clunking tapers off, the clunks slowly gets quieter after doing it maybe about 2 or 3 times after the clutch is pushed in. It shifts fine, no grinding issues or anything else, and it only does it when i am going really slow in 1st gear. I can sort of replicate that clunk if i am going slow enough in 3rd or 4th (usually coasting or idling while still moving) and then you hit the gas hard, and the driveshaft slack makes that clunk sound, it sounds about the same. Anybody else have this?

My 04 clunks on everything. I get the same sounds, clunks when I downshift to 1st when coming to a stop...lots of clunk out of this drivetrain I've noticed. I've had 5spd's before...not as much clunk, but not as much power and torque either...so I've just figured this is normal, especially if I'm not being careful and do something just a tad careless. If I drive like my granny, I can almost not make the car clunk or shudder or 1st-2nd dump truck shift when shifting!

mine is worse now than new though. new I had no abnormal noise. I could make it surge but it would not clunk like it does now.

It suppose it could come from about 4 places or a combination of them. tranny mount, rear end backlash, tranny itself, and u-joints.

it is getting bad enough in my car I am going to start chasing it down. Start by checking the ujoints obviously. the backlash is easy to check as well but you have to pull the rear cover.

Is there a way to tighten things up? With a stage 2 clutch and the loose drivetrain all I hear is clicking, clanking and clashing its pissing me off....

Well I can tell you this....Backlash for the ring and pinion in these rears I believe are factory spec at .012-.016 of an inch. That is rediculous. That is where alot of the "clunk" comes from. It also explains the flop in the rear you feel when you let off the gas and the tap it again. If you end up doin a gear install or just for the hell of it try setting the backlash at .008 thousands of an inch. I bet that will make a huge difference in the drivetrain lash. But make sure you check you tooth pattern and don't go too tight or you might sheer your teeth off in cold weather.

i have a 02 and i too have the clunk when pressing the clutch in 1st gear at low rpm's. its normal. i thought it was the u-joints in the diff going out(my 02 has 80k), but the shop said they looked fine, and that it was loose backlash in the drivetrain.

my tranny also makes quite a bit of noise when shifting from 1-2 or 2-3, but again, i hear this is normal. i guess these are heavier duty trannies in the 02-04's or something, im really not sure but i heard that from a guy with a pretty built 02 gt.

Yes...it happens on almost all 3650 trannies, mine included. I guess you didn't see the long ass 40 page post about the 3650 trannies.

No I havent seen that. I haven't had my car for too long and I have always wondered if this is just my car or something! I feel a lot better now knowing it is everyone's car!

Even on the automatics....MOST OF YOUR CLUNK IS FROM BEHIND THE TRANNY. Yes you will have some clunk from the tranny it's self with the manuals. If it's u-joints it's usually a mattalic clank rather then a clunk when you coasting then blip the thottle. You shouldn't have a problem tightening the backlash as long as you don't go to tight.
