Clunk type of noise from the front of the car? Struts? Brakes? Joints?

Hi,

I was working on the brakes and i actually completely removed the caliper on the driver's side(where the clunk is coming from now) and then put it back.

Now after driving around i noticed that on road irregularities there is a clunk type of sound coming from the same area I worked on... at first i thought it was the strut/shock, but then it made no sense...

I wish i could describe the sound... I am going to be taking off the wheel today to see if something is coming off, but what else should i check for? do i need to readjust the caliper?

I hope it's not the joints, because i have no clue how to do those...

Are you sure you torqued down the caliper enough? I removed my calipers when I was doing my spring swap. Days later I started having a clunking sound. I pulled the wheels back off and sure enough the calipers had worked themselves loose.

i will be checking that today! i think that is a good possibility... it took me and a crowbar a good 20 minutes to remove the caliper bolts... and then when i was putting it back on i just made sure they don't move... but that's what you can get with a wrench... i'll use a bigger tool this time

And a torque wrench... Not sure what the torque value is supposed to be though. If you need I can look that up in my Haynes manual for you tonight.

Same for me, Heard a clunking sound ever so often.. this did start right after my spring install too

checked my left caliper, low and behold... loose!! Haven't had the problem since!!

same thing happened to me...... only the guy i had asked to tighten the wheel to the car... didn't tighten the lugs down to spec... he only tightened them up "semi" tight....

when i got home i was like.. WTF was that noise.. and looked.. checked the lugs.. they were loose as hell.. i'm surprised i still had a wheel on the car.. =o\

Okay... this is assuming that you have a '94-'98... I'm sure '99+ is the same though. Don't know about prior years.

Front caliper should be 64 Ft-lbs (except Cobra)

Rear caliper is 23 to 26 Ft-lbs

Anchor plate bolts are 95 Ft-lbs

I had a clunking sound problem as well. You could really hear it when you first start to accelerate or after you stop. Basically when there was any body roll. I took some silicone spray to every moving part under there to no avail. So I finally took it into Ford and had them look at it. Come to find out, it was the tranny mounting bolts had come loose. Try checking those bolts while your under there. If they are loose, locktite them and you should be good to go.
