Clunk!

Sometimes in my 04 GT I get a "clunk" from the front suspension. It only happens when I'm braking and turning in somewhere, and that usually happens to be on uneven surfaces (bumps and what not).

I was up under my car yesterday, and all the suspension/steering components seem to be tight. I can't find any slack/unnecessary movement anywhere. I've investigated the tie rod ends, ball joints, etc. and can't figure out where this is coming from. Does anyone have an idea what could cause this?

It's my 04 GT w/ 40k, drives and handles great other than that.

clunk

I have a '97 and I had a clunk on mine when i would brake, or when I would be in reverse then move forward. I put it on a lift and noticed that a brace under the car had come loose over time. The brace is just one rod that goes from the drivers side to the passenger side. There is only one bolt on each side. Both the bolts had come loose about 1 to 2 turns. I tightened those up and I haven't heard the clunk again.

Do you mean your front sway bar?

No it's not either one of those. If I can get it on a lift sometime soon I'll take a picture and show you what I'm talking about. I'll try to get it up tomorrow at work.

I have a 97GT myself and I've had that clunking/knocking noise when ever I turn the car so far either direction or end up pulling into somewhere where the ground is uneven. It gets annoying and I've never been able to find it. Everything is tight, I've checked and rechecked and nothing. I've honestly thought it was in the transmission, 5 speed, cause that's about the only thing I have that makes any type of noise.

The little bar they speak of is right on or just behind the K-member and it's about 18" long roughly... been a while since I was under there.

You can always do the quick easy fix... Turn up your radio really loud!:rlaugh:

HAHA jk, also if your car is lowered then did you put the rubber isolators back? cuz i know i didnt and my car clunked hella bad, for a while till i got some new ones.. Or you could just use bike tire.. someone said that works 2 lol...

My car is lowered but I do have rubber isolators.

my car used to make a clunk on startup like the exhaust was hitting the passenger side floor. since Ive done the longtubes I haven't heard it at all. front suspension makes all kind of noises in these cars once you get some miles on them. gives your car some personality!!

I had a similar noise for about 2 months i was first told it was my struts so i replaced them with tokico illuminas with matching springs and it was still clunking. then i was told it was the stearing rack bushings NOPE. finally i took it to the stealership and the found that my k menber brace strearing rack attatchment hdwr and 2 k member bolts were loose. try those before you start replacing anything look up the torque specs and hit all the suspenion nuts and bolts with a torque wrench
