Clutch Adjustment/free play Probs

I just installed a new clutch cable on my 96 GT, as my stock one snapped. It's not an andustable one, just the cable itself from Pep Boys. My pedal used to be extremely stiff, but now it's stiff for the first 2 or so inches then extremely easy to push in after. The clutch doesn't engage until like 2 inches until it's all the way out. What can I do to fix this, if anything?
