@%#&!$@ Clutch Cable

On an '89 Notch 5.0, 5spd with CC: I'm replacing the factory quadrant and can't get the pawl (small adjuster piece) off of the shaft. :mad:

The pawl is about 3/4" thick and the gap between the end of the shaft and the steel dash brace is about 1/2" ... I can't figure it out since I pulled the factory piece off my SSP (no cruise) a few years ago ... what's different, why is it giving me a headache ... and the car is unwrecked and mint (nothing bent) :shrug:

Please help me if you've had a similar experience or know the solution :hail2:
 
I've heard of a hacksaw through the firewall hole.

what is holding you back is the springs and clips, not the plate on the firewall. If you haven't released all your clips, then it'll hold back, and you'll think that plate is keeping it on. I'll attach some pics of how it is fastened on, then you'll have to "unfasten" yours. once that is done, use your tire iron and pry on it with the clutch pedal at different angles, and it'll pop right off.

Note how that little arm on the spring goes right through the small quadrant

this is probably what's holding you on, the little spring part going through the small quadrant. If this isn't off, it'll keep snapping back on you.

I used a small but long flat tip screw driver to push the spring over the meal bracket then slid the flat tip under the spring where it goes into the prawl to pry it loose. I've heard that many folks have to break the prawl to get it off. I did not. Once the springs were off, I had JUST enough room to teeter it off of the bracket and get it out in once piece. Others have actually bent the bracket a tad to get enough clearance. It's just one of those things where you have to hold your tongue just right to get it to cooperate.

:nice: Right on the money. That's the route I had to take with an assistant to hold the pedal and the adjuster in the perfect spot to hack it off with a hand grip saw (like a screwdriver with a blade). It was the only way to avoid disassembling the dash. :nonono:
