clutch install gone terribly wrong

ok i went to my shop today i started the car keep in mind its still on jack stands i rolled under it while it was running i grabbed the fork it vibrates really bad any ideas?

loose clutch cable or the fork fell off the bell housing "joint"

Be really carefull when climbing under the car while its running. A buddy of mine had his car on jackstands and the stand in the front wasn't properly planted on the car and when he went to crank it the car jerked and fell off the jack stand in the front and it went through his floor pan a little bit. Did a hell of alot of damage.

JUST TAKE THE TRANNY OUT. Make sure everything is tight like the pressure plate. I had a car that was abnoxiously clunky and I couldn't figure it out until I pulled the tranny and found 1.5 bolts holding the PP on. That was scarry.

I always buy the steel Bearing Retainer and a different TB. I don't like the ford bearing after having to change two in one week with the same car. Nothing like pulling a tranny four times. Make sure you take off your exhaust to to give you more room.

A trick I learned about locating the tranny in the spline slot is to find one valley on the spline and keep it at the top as you tighten down the PP. Then Mark the tranny with a peak at the exact top. Slide them together watching the marks. The last time I did the tranny by marking it, it went in the first push. No fighting to line it up. I had my exhaust out too. Had it all back together in thirty minutes. Nice!

I took the tranny off first then the bell. Replacing, I put the bell on the tranny and installed it. After about ten Mustang T-5 changes, You will perfect the installation!!!

Just for the record. All the stupid stuff that no one else ever has happen to them, always happens to me. The last clutch I installed, made a really crappy noise. A lot like the clutch just fell apart and was flying all over inside the bell housing, but it was just part of the clucth breaking in. It was very scary cus it was the first time I ever did a big job on my car ALL by myself. I always helped my brother work on it. So I was very happy once the noise went away after a few miles.

so you take the tranny off the bellhousing then the bellhousing then attach the bellhousing to the tranny then put the bellhousing and the tranny up together?

I had a similar problem with my brothers LX when we put in the King Cobra same noise, everything. When we would turn it on, you could hear a tapping noise on the bellhousing and you could feel it if you put your hand on the bottom part of the bellhousing while the car was on. We took out the tranny again, took off the bellhousing and looked inside. For some reason, the pressure plate was hitting against the bottom part of the housing.We could easily see scrape marks on the housing. So what we did is take a grinder and grind off a bit of the housing where it was rubbing on the inside and assembled it again. We turned it on and the noise was gone. From what you are describing, I could almost guarantee that is your problem, take a look and good luck!!!

interesting, I've used that TOB that came in the ford clutch kit three different times and never had one problem.

If you must get another TOB, use a TIMKEN autozone one. Be sure it's the all steel one, they make both steel and plastic ones.

FYI, you are not "supposed" to grease the t/o bearing on install. they are pre-greased. In fact, too much grease can and will fling off onto the clutch and ruin it. I never grease mine. If you must, be sure to do a super light coat.

as well, when you take it apart, look at the inside of the bell housing. My buddy recently, and some others in the past, on occasion have rubbing with the pressure plate against the inside of the bell housing. Can't be explained, and i've heard of this doing it with all different kinds of clutches.

If this is your problem, and you've ruled out installation issues, usually you can clearance the bell for the clutch by grinding it away.

My first thought was I was reading this post was the clutch fork was loose and vibrating against the bellhousing. I had the same problem before b/c the pins on the fork were worn and weren't holding the fork in position on the ballstud. Before I got a new clutch fork, I took a piece of heater hose and cut it in half and slide it onto the opening of the bellhousing where the fork runs through so that the fork had something soft to ride against and absorb the vibration. It quieted it down and it operated without any problems for quite a while before I dropped the tranny again to do some work.

I knew it Glad I could be of help!! I still don't know why these pressure plates do that? I know the Motorsport clutch sets don't give problems like that...Later

everything is fixed the only problem im having now is the trans seal at the driveshaft is leaking

atleast you dont have to pull the tranny again to fix that.
