If I am coasting into a stop with the clutch all the way in and in neutral, and I go over a pothole/bump I hear a metallic rattle/knock kind of noise, sounds like it is from the gearbox or clutch.
Is this normal for a manual tranny car, or something I should be concerned about?

I bet it was something other than the drivetrain. Does it do it just when the clutch is engaged?

Maybe something loose in the linkage?

Heck, I don't really know.

Yeah, I had the same exact problem! I drove off the lot with a broken rear trans mount. I would have Ford check it out.

Good Luck.

Thanks alot. This is my first 5spd and I did not know if these noises were normal or not.
I'll have ford check it out next week.
(that is if they don't void this warranty work due to my mach grille delete mod and tint...haha once a dealer voided my exhaust warranty b/c I changed the suspension + tires )

Well, I finally got an appointment to bring this thing in for service next week. Ya, I know bad, but it is hella hard trying to do without the GT for transportation even for just one day. It has 1,600 mile as of now. I have also noticed a few new problems, and hopefully they can take care of it all at once. I talked to the service writer and I told him what was wrong, he did not really have any ideas on what it could be.
I have typed up alittle report on exactly what is wrong (symptoms) that I will be handing in with the GT when it goes in. I would be awesome if you could tell me some specific things for them to check out (like tranny mount as suggested above). Cause I hate to fawk around all week with this just to have them give me back the broken GT saying the infamous "Unable to reproduce problem"

1) Front windows make a “creek” or knocking noise when rolled down (at any level) and the vehicle is driven over even small bumps. The driver’s side window is worse than the passenger side.
2) The 1-2 shift intermittently grinds or clunks. Sometimes it does, other times it is fine.
3) When the vehicle is driven over bumps and potholes (even slowly) there is a knocking or metal clunk that can be heard from the transmission/clutch area, could possible be from the axle, but I am not certain. A knock felt on the shifter handle usually accompanies the knocking sound. It is worse when the clutch is fully depressed.

Mine does a similar thing . I just moved into a new house and on one of the roads, it has a steep decline then a quick dip at the stop sign. As Im stopping I put the clutch in, and pop it in N and I can hear that sound your talking about. If I leave it in gear and have the clutch in, I can hear it slightly and feel a little tapping on the gear shifter like somethings hitting it. I have had my tranny out for a new clutch to go in though, so I would think if I had a bad tranny mount the shop would have seen it right?

1 - get some silicone based lube and spray the black window strips, wipe off excess......that should cure the squeeking windows, the other noise is very common and sometimes means the window motor is going bad......mine has made the knocking noises while being rolled down for over a year....i just deal with it

2 - slow down your shifting while the car is cold, once it warms up the shifting should get smoother.....look for the T-3650 issues thread at the top of page 1 in 4.6 tech.....it might help you get pointed in the right direction

3 - all 99+ GT's have drivetrain slack, when the clutch is pressed in the driveshaft/tranny/rear-end has a little slack in it and it will cause the cluncking sound when you hit bumps......once the clutch is engaged the sound usually goes away for the most part because there is tension on the drivetrain......mine does this also when the car is in neutral or the clutch is pressed in...some people have tried to get this fixed with little success. all the 99+ GT's i've driven or worked on have made this noise......if you want, put the car in 1st gear and crawl under it(car off, of course) and grab the driveshaft and twist it in either direction...you will see/feel the drivetrain slack i'm talking about...
