clutch or worn synchros?

My '96 GT has a stock T-45 tranny and currently has a stock clutch. More often than not when i shift the gears grind as if the clutch isn't fully engaging. When I downshift with the clutch in, it also grinds. It does it more often than not on a 2-3 shift. I have bought a Fidanza clutch kit and it is sitting in the garage waiting to be installed, but before I get it installed I was wondering if anyone knew anything that I didn't. I am hoping it is just the clutch and not the synchronizers. Any knowledge would be great. thanks

I would be that the clutch is at fault. Mine had a slight grind but went away after the new clutch install. Do you have anyway to adjust the cable?? or try pulling the clutch pedal away from the floor to reset the stock quadrant??

Some questions
1) are you sure that the clutch pedal is on the floor when shifting (I know -- but I have seen people set the seat to wheel distance and then cannot push the clutch to the floor)
2) If you do not have your foot on the gas how far off of the floor is the clutch before the car starts to move or stalls.
3) as asked above -- have you tried adjusting the clutch

i have tried adjusting the quadrant before and that didn't help. i do push the pedal all the way to the floor, so that isn't it either. I will have to get back to you on how far the pedal is up before the car pulls and as far as trying to adjust the cable. I am at school but i'll try looking into it tonight.

There is also a weird transmission noise/shift when i put the car in neutral and let off of the clutch. it does it from any gear into neutral. I may try getting a video clip on here soon so you could hear the sound.

If you have to keep your foot into the rug to keep the clutch disengaged then the adjustment is way off..

stock quadrant sucks and over time the cable can stretch, the pressure plate fingers can get damaged.

First I would start with a manual cable adjustment.

the clutch pedal is about half way down when the car starts to pull.

how would i perform a manual cable adjustment?

did you do that from idle at a stop.. push all the way down to the floor and without touching the gas slowly let up on the clutch until the rpm's start to drop and the car starts to move.

as far as doing a manual adjustment it can be kind of hard to do because you have to get under the dash there is a good write up on one of the mustang sites with pics I will try to find it..

you have to tighten it a few teeth should be enough
