Well not many people responded to my last thread so I will try again. I just got my car out from winter storage and took it for a drive. I noticed the clutch pedal chatters whenever I let it out completely. If I put a little pressure on it, it goes away. What do you guys believe the problem is. I have replaced the stock cable with a new stock cable and I have a UPR quadrant and FWA. Do you think I just need to adjust the clutch?

DTC, i just replied to your other thread a few minutes ago. thank you for posting this one - you used some terms differently than i do and i did not understand what you meant the first time around. you can preload the TOB a little, as this is common practice. and if that is the only issue, it should work. (i explained more about this and about the terms which mean different things to each of us, on your other thread).

good luck bud.

Could be you have a bad release bearing, or the shaft that the bearing rides on could have a bad spot on it. There are replacements for the shaft that are supposed to be "better" than stock. Hope this helps!

Well I may end up changing out the clutch anyway, just for safe measurement. I will probably end up with a Kind Cobra. What all does this come with? What else should I get? Any certain TOB, input shaft, PP, flywheel?

Also, with the UPR FWA, I forget how to adjust it. Can anyone remind me?

I have the UPR firewall adjuster...but I can't remember for sure which way was which...

I was wanting to say clockwise pulled the "grab" closer to the floor and counterclockwise did the opposite. Just turn it a bit and then you will tell which way goes where when you sit and drive it.

I'd almost be willing to bet that it is not adjusted "tight enough" as JT said...I had the very same problem and I just didn't have it tight enough. I could push on the pedal just a bit and it would go away...

Try adjusting the clutch again...real easy.

Good Luck

Turning the firewall adjuster counter clockwise tightens the cable, and the clutch will start to engage higher up on the pedal.

Turning the FWA clockwise loosens the cable, and lets the clutch start to engage closer to the floor.

Pull on the cable by the FWA, if you can pull it away from the FWA you have slack in it. If there is slack in it tighten the cable.

I would try and tighten the cable first before I changed out the clutch. But don't tighten it too much or you could burn up the clutch if it is too tight and not dissengaging.

As for what you need to change the clutch: Clutch kit, usually comes with a clutch disk, pressure plate, and throw out bearing. You will also need a pilot bearing.

Well I'll be damned! I just went out and pulled on the clutch cable and the whole FWA moved around! Why does UPR only have 1 screw holding it to the FW?

It only has one screw holding it to the firewall, because that is how the ford held the original cable to the firewall. When the screw is tight, the firewall adjuster should not wiggle around. If it does you got some other problems, check for the cracks in the firewall around the adjuster.

Also if the FWA is moving around then it sounds like you do not have enough preload on it. It usually has enough to hold some pressure on it so it doesn't move.

I had the same problem you're having on my 83.... Turned out the throw out bearing was gone, and the bearing retainer was completely shot... huge gouges in it... Caused the clutch pedal to shake and the clutch fork to shake like crazy. Just my .02.

I'm pretty sure this problem is all in the adjustment which is shown by the firewall adjuster moving and him just installing these parts...

Well I just ran a bigger self-tapping screw through the hole and it holds fine. I tightened the cable also. I still have about 1 inch of play in the pedal before it starts to get tight. Do you guys think I should move the cable to the furthest hook on the quadrant and back off the FWA? This is the quadrant I have.

Most people use the middle hook on the UPR quadrant when they adjust their clutch pedal. Try different settings to see...did you turn the FWA all the way clockwise (tighten the cable)?

Not all of the way but a good bit. I don't want it engaging too high.

I have a little time to work on my car tomorrow so I will mess with it some more. I seem to be a bit confused when talking about putting a little preload on the cable. Does this mean that I need to turn my FWA all the way clockwise? If this does help with the play in the pedal wouldn't my pedal be engaging very high?

It really depends on what "high" is to you...I personally don't like a clutch that grabs low to the floor...neither high. In the clutchs I have adjusted I seem to find a happy medium each time.

Turning the cable clockwise will help put preload (tighten) the cable...you don't need to turn it ALL THE WAY...just keep turning it bit by bit until the chatter goes away and your happy with it...

Well I am bringing this back from the dead. I was under my car today installing my Magnaflow catback, which I love way more than the Flowmasters by the way, and I decided to take a look at the clutch cable from beneath. I took off the cover for the clutch fork and I noticed there is play in it. Is there supposed to be play in the clutch fork? If not, what would the problem be?

How much "play" is there...it should be a little loose...but you want some tension on it as we expressed earlier.

Edit Yeah as JT put below...(which I should have specified better) the cable should have just a bit of slack in it from what I understand and have did. Now the clutch fork will move up and down a bit in the "housing"...if that is what your talking about...
