Just out of curiosity, I wanted some of your estimations on how long a clutch should last under the following conditions:
99 GT 4.6L
Not driven hard, but not babied either... it is, after all, a Stang.
I'm a good stick driver... only driven stick. I don't sit on the clutch, etc.

I ask cause I have 55k miles on my car and yesterday the dealer told me I need a new clutch... all feels fine, albeit, pedal is a tad high even after adjustments. Dealer said GT clutches only last about 60k miles... I've had other mustangs and the only clutch I ever put in was at 120k....

Any thoughts? Thanks people!

the dealer just wants your money....if it ain't broke....don't fix it

some guys on here have over 80k on the factory clutch.....

I was told when I first got mine that it would only last for around 60,000 miles. I honestly had no intentions of keeping the stock clutch in the car for anywhere near that long. To me they are just to mushy feeling. There is to much of a space in which the clutch "grabs" On mine, it felt like I had literally 3 or 4 inches of clutch that it would grab at, and it wasnt in one spot in particular, just all around those few inches. After some burnouts, powershifts, and just general driving, mine was slipping a bit in 2nd and 3rd when I would hit it. When the L/Ts went in I said what the heck, lets do a Spec Stage II. Now it has a definate spot in which it grabs, there is 0 slipping and I LOVE IT!!! Its basically a tie for the best mod I have done to my car :nice:

I replaced the clutch in my 99 with a Spec Stage III at 65k miles. It feels wierd driving the 02 with 24k and stock clutch. I miss the hard grab the aftermarket clutch gives you, especially if you like to powershift.

LOL, yeah he just wants your money. when I had my stock clutch on, I had plenty of track visits, drove the car pretty hard, i replaced it with a spec stage 2 when I had my motor rebuilt at about 45k and the clutch was fine, don't worry about it, keep your money.

I'd say 60k is about right.. my 96GT's clutch would slip when it got around that mileage.. replaced it with a king cobra. I'd say wait until you actually notice it slipping though.

Thanks for the info guys!

I appreciate all your feedback. A new question: What would you put in place of the stock cluth and how much do you think it will cost? Thanks again everybody. I really appreciate all the great feedback I find on this forum.
