Hey guys. I have a 97 GT and the clutch doesn't engage/dis-engage until the very top of the pedal. It has been that way since I bought it, a little over a year ago but hasn't gotten worse. It doesn't slip when shifting. I have tried doing the self adjusting thing and it doesn't do anything. So does it sound like it needs replaced? Should I replace it now or wait until it goes out?

I got a quote from a clutch place and they said for a stage 1 south bend clutch (the brand they use) with new TOB and resurfacing the flywheel ect. He said with all parts and labor it would be $500+tax. And it has a lifetime warranty, as long as you don't burn the crap out of it. Does this sound like a decent price? Thanks for your help!

My clutch disengages high too. Take it on a hill going up and put it in 5th at a low RPM/MPH. Floor it and if the clutch doesnt slip no reason to change it now. Will the car go in reverse and move just by using the clutch and no gas on a flat surface? If you do both of these and the clutch doesnt slip and the car moves with slow clutch play and no gas. No sense in changing it just yet. The deal he gave you seems like a fair price. If you just want a new clutch thats fine but i sure as hell wouldnt replace it with no noticeble driveability issues slippage ect.

my 96 gt is the same way. the clutch doesnt disengage until almost the floorboard. it mmakes me grind when i shift fast at high rpm! im thinking that the cause of this may be a stretched clutch cable. any opinions?

It could be a cable, buying a new cable and quadrant off of the net could easily solve your problems and if they exist or worsen before you install the quadrant it could be the clutch disk slipping.

When I fried my clutch, my mechanic said the cable had gotten wound up on itself after I beat on it a little bit.

Kinda the opposite of my problem...my clutch action is all in the first couple of inches of the pedal.

It can't hurt anything to just wait until the clutch goes out can it? Thanks
