This car has had a set of Cobra 1.7RR on it for several years now, over 2 years of that I have owned it. I've had them on and off a few different times for various reasons, one being an engine rebuild. They have always been run with a TFS Stage 1 cam, giving a total lift of .530 and .541. I have Comp Cam double springs set up for this combo, which were done with the engine rebuild.

I'm currently swapping in an Anderson N41 camshaft and reusing my 1.7's. I went to reinstall and noticed that I had two pedestals broken in half. They split right down the middle where the rocker rides in the "saddle", as I call it. Both these pedestals were located on different cylinders, although I don't know which ones they came off of. I went to reinstall the others, and split one more down the middle while torqueing to 20lbs. I stopped at this point.

I googled searched the issue and found several people with the same problems over the years. A few claimed that Ford had a recall on the pedestals for this reason. Many just ordered replacements and went on. I never found a post where the replacements broke, so I'm hoping that it was just a manufacturing flaw and the replacements will be okay.

That said, I bought a replacement set from Summit. They were only $12. Anyone else experienced this? Did you just replace and move forward? Also, one of the rockers has got a good bite on the underside, next to the roller, where you can see that the aluminum body rode on the valve tip. All valves tips look good though. I think the rocker is fine, it just galled up the aluminum.

If it helps, I run rocker channels and a .030" shim. When torqued, I can barely rotate the intake pushrod and the exhaust pushrod rotates fairly easily. The new cam should check in at .544/.544. I turned the motor over a few times with only the good rockers in place. It looks like I will have no problems with coil bind. Also, I run SRS pistons with tons of valve clearance.

Thanks in advance!

Joe

I had the same problem when I installed mine on my Edelbrock heads. I replaced mine with the ones from summit and didn't have a problem since. However I think the whole problem was b/c i messed up the torque sequence/ procedure.

What did you do wrong? I made sure both valves were closed and torqued to 20lbs, just like I have done in the past. Plus, it looks like two of them broke while installed. These things are 20 years old now, just hoping the new ones work out.

Thanks for reply!

If memory serves I was trying to get the lash tighter on the valves and wasn't paying attention to the torque wrench.

UPDATE!!!

Well, one thing I like about forums is that we can learn from other's mistakes. So here is mine:

I got my replacement pedestals yesterday, but didn't get to look at them until today. First thoughts, they are no different. Looks like the same design and same metal. Then, I noticed a little slip of paper in the box that says "Flat side on rocker arm fulcrum must face up!" I ran out to the garage to look, and sure enough, I had several of the rockers installed with the fulcrum upside down. One side is curved to sit flush inside the pedestal and the other is flat where the head of the bolt is suppossed to go. Scary thing is, the last time I had these off was over a year ago. I don't know if they held out this long, or if they have been broken that long. I'm going to replace all of them, just incase the others have been comprimised.

While it is embarrassing, I'm glad its not the rockers (meaning shelling out more $$$ for new ones), but rather me. Hopefully someone will find this post one day and it will help them out.

I subscribed to this thread just in case.
One thing I like is that with this car, every mistake had been made before, so by researching, I learn a lot what to do and not.
Did you happen to snap any pictures?

Just got done putting the lower intake back on and now headed to bed. I have all day tomorrow to work on it (wife and kid going to see grandparents). I'll snap some pics tomorrow and post them up.

Got everything buttoned up yesterday, only to have water pouring out the bottom of the water pump. I think I warped the back plate and its not sitting flush. Anyways, my camera was acting up, so no pics. But I did take video of the broken rocker pedestals. Here they are for anyone who wanted to see.
