cobra brake kit

I was looking at ordering the front and rear cobra brake kits for my 01 gt.
I heard you should install the cobra master cylinder and lines or else the pedal will be stiff, anyone put these in without them, and where could I buy these from if I were to us them?

I installed a 04 cobra front brake kit which included rotors, calipers, pads, and goodrich brake lines.. That all i used and my pedal is just fine.

Buy the front kit. The rears will require more work and overall probably are not worth it for street driving and occasional track.

I bought my calipers from here (the red running mustang ones, come with brake pads):
Buy Ford Racing Parts - Mustang / Cobra Brakes

Then from american muscle:
cobra rotors for the front
GT rotors for the back
Stainless steel brake lines for the front
new gt brake pads for the back.

Just getting new parts for your brakes will improve your braking a ton, it depends on what you want to do and what your budget allows. The GT brakes are decent if you get better GT sized rotors and pads. Cobra brakes are just extra and you will end up spending a little more (+300 dollars). The cobra front upgrade looks sweet and there is way less fade, I really like it.

No master cylinder upgrade needed.

thanks for the help, i wondered if the rear set was worth it seeing as the front does the most braking. i think i will just upgrade the front and get new pads and rotors for the rear like your said. is there any reason you ordered from both sites instead of getting it all from american muscle? i live in Canada and shipping separately will cost me more. if you only went with the ford racing site so you could get the calipers in red i think i will order this from american muscle.

I pieced all my crap together from various places. Ended up with 10th anniv cobra calipers front & rear, rear install kit w/ factory cobra rotors, cheap rotors for the front (for now) and SS braided front brake hoses.

My result was a solid pedal with good feel, and a HUGE increase in performance. In total I spent around $600. So far one of my favorite mods.

Hi,

I did the upgrade on the front only and it made a massive difference over the stock ones. I got my kit from AM but went with the Red Calipers with the Pony on them and I think they look sweet!

Only thing i had to do was bleed the Master Cylinder to get the peddle feel right since I drained the fluid by accident

i couldnt find any red ones on AM but i think ill go with the black anyway, does anyone know where i could buy just the rear cobra rotors

Please do not get the HP+ Hawks unless you like a ton of noise and dust! If your car is a weekend/auto X toy then by all means, but I have these for my fronts and they get annoying. My friends can hear me enter the neighborhood not because of my new exhaust (SLP) but because of the me braking.

Anything ceramic. They usually have good friction for a DD and dust as little as the rest of them. Hawk Ceramics would be a better choice. The only good thing about the HP+, is that they grab about as hard as a World Challenge car with 8 piston calipers like the one I rode in a couple weeks ago.

Night and day difference, one of the best mods i have done to my car. Be careful when installing the new lines to the car though, those fittings can easily strip out, then you have to cut the lie back and re-flare it, it happened to me and was a real pain to get it right.

You don't need to change the master cylinder. The Cobra and Gt both use 1 1/16" MC's. The Cobra calipers are a little smaller than the 99-04 GT calipers, but the hydroboost can compensate.

The only time you need to change the MC is when installing Cobra brakes on a 94/95 GT. The MC bore is too big on the GT and the vacuum booster cannot compensate.

Just make sure you bleed the MC out as well. I had Cobra brakes on my '03 GT...awesome mod. The brakes are not on my fox 5.0...so same braking...in a 500 pound less car.

thanks for everyones advice, i was able to get them from mopac without paying shipping so i went with them, but the kit they offered had the master cylinder for 10 bucks more so i thought why not. should i put it in anyway since ive got one or is it just more of a hassle for no result?

Also thought id mention American Muscle's great customer service. I ordered headlights from them almost 8 months ago, there was a bit of flaking on the black stripe inside near the top recently and i sent them a pic without even mentioning replacement. they replied quickly, are sending me a new pair and even paying to return the damaged ones
Great job AM, if this happened before i ordered brakes i would have been willing to pay more to get them from you

2001 Cobra and 2001 Gt have the same MC...so no point swapping.

I'm wondering if they are sending you a 94-95 cobra MC, as 94-95 GT's require an MC change with the upgrade

I went to put in the kit today, everything went great but my rims dont quite clear the new calipers. im going to go pick up some wheel spacers tomorrow i was think 1/4 inch would be enough. anyone else have the same problem for far our did you bump yours? i dont want to get them and realize 1/4 isnt enough (wich i doubt) but i also dont want to get anything bigger than i need

well now that its all in and not hitting my rims, the brake pedal feels soft and doesnt bite until the pedal is almost to the floor, i bleed the lines more and it got a little bit better but still no good. i decided i would put in the master cylinder that came with the kit and the flanges the bolt in on were completely opposite to the stock one. the cylinder would sit sideways, theres no making it work. now im wondering what the hell they gave me i looked at my friends 96 and it was just like mine
