Cobra brakes question

I have a 1990 5.0 with '98 cobra rear brakes. I read that you need some ford motor sports parking brake cables to hook up the parking brakes to a fox body, M2810A and M2809A. Will I need to do any modifications to the parking brake lever or any thing else to use these cables? Or I have the factory '98 cobra parking brake cables, will these work at all? I have Baer 13 inch brakes in the front, I don't have an adjustable proportioning valve in the system, do I need one?

You need to weld the adjustment pawl in place on the e-brake handle. I'm sure someonewill post a link shotly as i don't have one.

A propotioninig valve is STRONGLY recommended.

I assume yo have also changed your MC?? The Baer brakes are basically Cobra brakes wth the BAER logo on them, so a 94-95 Cobra MC or a 94-95 GT/V6 MC would work nice. '93 Cobra stuff would work as well. This assumes you haven't already changed it anyway

The baer kit came with a new MC and I did a modification to the stock proportioning valve/distribution block per Baer's instructions. I did not change the power brake booster and now it doesn't have much assist, so i will probably change it after I get the parking brake hooked up. How do you know if you need an adjustable PV? I still have the factory PV it's just not adjustable, correct?

Anytime you have non-stock brakes on a car, the proportioning changes. The factory block was tuned for the brakes and weight distribution of a stock Mustang.

With the prop valve mod, you are running 100% pressure to all brakes, which can be very dangerous if you have to panic stop.

You should get an adjustable. It's only $40 and installs in place of the brass union on the pass side firewall.

As for booster....93 Cobra fits nicely and offers good assist

Yes, Please add an Adj. Prop Valve as you dont want the Rear of your Car to pass you in a Panic Stop! IMHO a 93 Cobra Brake Booster is probably the best choice as the Stud Pattern and Thread Pitch are the same as your Stock Fox Booster.

I went from stock brakes to 99-04 PBR's and stock drums in the back. I used the stock 4cyl prop valve and it stops excellent, but if you have a bigger brake set up than I do, so I would also suggest going with an adjustable prop valve to be safe.

An adjustable prop valve allows you to also dial in more rear brake. Say for example you upgrade to DR's in the rear. They are a sticky tire so you get more traction. With some fine tuning, you could in theory dial in more brake pressure for more stopping power.

Thanks for the advice. I wish I would have found this web site years ago, before I started changing things around on my car. As I recall I don't think I gutted the factory PV, the car stops on a dime. Next time I order some parts I will get one though. A dear ran in front of me about three weeks ago, I was on the brakes hard, neither end locked up. If I would of had the factory brakes I would of hit the dear. I found some instructions for the FMS four wheel disc brake conversion, on page 17 and 18 it said how to modify the parking brake lever, is this how I need to modify mine to?

Yes, it says to cut some kind of spring tab, then weld the paw to the second tooth.

Those would be them then.

I also beleive if you wanted you could use an 94+ Sn95 e-brake. The Cobra e-brakes are leather wrapped and have a nice feel over the Fox e-brake.

I went ahead and used the 98 Cobra Handle so I could get the Nice Leather, I cut the Spring and then removed it completely so that it could not be a source of Rattling noise and welded the Pawl on the 2nd or 3rd Tooth, cant remember which one. The only down side to the Leather Handle is that it is Fatter which makes it harder to shove your drink between the Handle and the Passenger Seat!
