cobra cam???

I need help identifying if a cam that someone is trying to sell me a cam out of a 1993 cobra, I can't find any stamps on the cam, i am wondering if anyone knows how to tell if it is a cobra cam. thanks

Look to see if has "F3ZE-CA" on it. That is the part number.

The cam really doesn't have any numbers on it is the HO firing order but it doesn't have the same markings as a stock HO.

Aren't those cams the same as the HO cams they just have higher lift because the of 1.7 roller rockers?

Ugh, throw it in the trash. That cam is nothing special really.

It's actually nicknamed the "emmissions" cam and was the same camshaft used in the 91-93 Thunderbird/cougar with the 5.0 HO.

Just because it came out of a Cobra means nothing.

Think of it this way....would you pay money for a used cam out of a '91 Cougar???

That is true. It's not particularly special. The extra lift the Cobra had was in fact from the 1.7 rockers.

Originally developed for the 1993 Cobra's production GT-40 V8, this grind was also phased into OE Thunderbird/Cougar service during 1993 model year. The same cam was also used in the 1993 Cobra R-Model and was phased into the 1994-95 run of (Ford of Australia's) 5-liter V-8 Falcons. Compared to the F1ZE H.O. grind, this cam produced less horsepower but more torque.

I was just wondering because I could get one cheap and I don't feel like pulling my other cam before the engine swap.

You are wasting time and money on a used cobra cam. If you are going to do a cam swap, at least go to an alphabet cam (at min) and get some thing out of it.

It has less duration but a little more lift....you could say it's a bit milder than the stock 5.0L H.O. camshaft.

I agree with all. The cam is no better than the 5.0 cam. If you just add 1.7 RR's you can get .30 of lift on a stock HO cam and get better results. Other wise, buy a b cam or maybe an F cam. Anything higher you will have to dish the pistons because of the higher lift. Add the 1.7 RR's and a B cam and you should be happy.

Just pass on the cobra cam, I had a 93 Cobra cam and sold on Ebay for like $50 before installing it. That would have been a waste. I found out what everyone is telling you now and changed my mind. Now I have a 95 Cobra and need a bigger cam. Emissions cam for sure!!!

I think those results had a whole lot more to do with those heads then the cam. As I read more about the AFR heads I become more impressed with them all the time. I see them posting big numbers with the stock cam, 1.7s and the Cobra intake.

85-88 HO cam - 266/266 at .006" lift; lobe lift - .278"; .444" lift w/1.6 rockers

89-95 HO cam - 276/266 at .006" lift; lobe lift - .278"; .444" lift w/1.6 rockers

Cobra/93-on Cougar/T'bird cam - 270/270 at .006" lift; .282" lobe lift; .479" lift w/1.7 rockers.

Just so you know what those spec differences are. At .006" lift, the Cobra cam has about 3 degrees less overlap than the 85-88, about 6 degrees less than the 89-95. According to Ford's data (89Sleeper's footnote comes from that) the 85-88 all else equal on the stock set ups makes the most HP (about 3 more than the 89-95), and the Cobra cam makes slightly more peak torque and slightly less peak HP.

5L5 - note - it wasn't phased into the T'bird/Cougar until 93 - Ford saw it helped with low end torque over the HO cam, which helped move the porker t'birds and Cougars off the line.

I think the Cobra cam is unfairly maligned; with better heads/intake/exhaust, I think it would make a fine street cam especially for a heavier vert. Just don't expect it to still be making power at 5500 rpm.
