I have a 1988 GT AOD, i was wondering if anyone knew if i could install a 5speed computer in it, like a cobra or the a9l. or do i have to get the a9p?? please help
As stated above, the auto's use the A9P computer, but that's not to say that the A9L from the stick won't work. My car was originally an auto and when I first converted it to a stick, I hadn't changed the computer and it ran fine. After switching over to the proper computer, I really don't remember noticeing a difference. Cobra computers are the pits though.
Why does everyone always bash on Cobra computers? Just because you heard someone else say it? I hear that a lot, but no one ever say WHY it's so horrible. Mine seems to be doing a fine job, and I don't see what makes the others so better.
Cobra computer promote a less aggressive timing and fuel curve to curb emissions. And it only got worse in the 94-95 models. Great for keeping the tree huggers happy, bad for performance. Now you know.
The Cobra ECU is fine. It does require 24lbs injectors and a Cobra-specific MAF curve signal if you run it without a custom chip. But anyone who is modifying their EFI-equipped engine should have a custom chip anyway.
