Cobra or Edelbrock Intake for AFR 165's

I currently have a 1988 GT with a Cobra intake, 65 TB, 1.72's, 1 5/8 shorty headers, full 2 1/2 exhaust w/o cats on an other wise stock motor. I just bought some AFR 165 60cc heads, Edelbrock Performer (not RPM) intake, MSD digital 6 and 1.6 roller rockers all for $950 so it was a deal I couldn't pass up.

I want to know which intake would be the best one to use. I am going to have the heads ported and the intake I choose ported and matched to the heads. I also I am going to be installing an f-cam and converting the car to mass air with a 75mm Pro-M and I want to use the 1.72's unless the valves hit.

If the heads you got are in decent shape, you got a great deal. I don't know why you'd want to port the heads though. Kinda defeats the purpose of getting AFR's. The Edelbrock should be easier to port due to the removeable plenum cover.

well cam lift with the stock 1.6 ratio rocker is .512 but with your 1.72 the lift is .550.. so it will be close but as we all know the max lift number is where ptv clearance is a problem.. but you should always check ptv clearance when installing a cam.. no matter what it is.. as for intakes.. if your going to have one ported i would say edelbrock.. easy to port with the removable cover..

the RPM or RPM2 intake is one of the most popular intakes on AFR heads. proven winner.

+1 not much material to be removed from AFRs.

stangateurlilss - At peak lift the piston is quite a ways down in the cylinder when the valve is open. Duration and period of overlap have more to do with it, along with valve size, and piston style/type.

The regular Performer is very popular as well...with the 165's...Ed Curtis said that they have a more useable powerband than the RPM to me...but mine is more street use (daily driver)...it likes to rev just fine at 6,000rpm by the way

There are only two reasons to EVER run a Cobra intake:

1) You like/want the Cobra name on top.

2) It was free and you have nothing else.

The Performer is a better intake, and it costs less. Same with just about every other intake on the market.

Like others have said, I wouldn't mess with the AFR's. Just match your Performer to the AFR's.

Thanks for the responses. Looks like the cobra will be up for sale so if anyone wants it let me know.

The heads have about 5-10,000 miles on them but are in really good shape. I am just going to have them port matched to the intake and cleaned up from the miles. I have a friend at a performance shop so it isn't going to cost me anything and since he will already be doing the intake I figure now is a good time. I am also going to spray this motor pretty good so I want to get all I can out of it.

Ported, both the performer and cobra will be a very good match to the AFR heads. I doubt you will see a difference in performance either way. If you go to FTI's website, and look at some of Ed Curtis's combos.. The ported cobra guys are running the same times as the edelbrock intake guys..

I say chose which one you like the looks of best, or sell the one you can make the most money off of...

On Ed's website their isn't much selection to look at it, and plus combos differ greatly...powerband of cam, accessories that are being run, race weight, etc...etc...
