Cobra or GT40 intake?

I have a basically stock motor(see sig). my stock intake looks really bad in its appearance so I want to upgrade(not just for appearance though). the car is a somewhat daily driver but only in the summer. I was thinking about getting the BBK intake but the thread about it has leaned me more towards the 2 I'm inquiring about. I don't really race the car but would like to have a little more power. like I stated in the other thread I want low end torque instead of high end hp. I see the GT40 runs around 600.00 while the Cobra runs under 400.00 unless I go polished(which I might). I also want to get new gears(currently running 2.73s) so if I went with the Cobra I could apply the extra towards them.

now would you hold off on getting the Cobra intake and just jump on the GT40 or what? I'm thinking I'll eventually get a set of GT40 iron heads somewhere down the road as well, but no time in the near future.

I'm hoping the pros here can steer me in the right direction.

oh yeah, one other thing, how much of a mileage change can I expect going from 2.73s to either 3.27 or 3.55? the car sees more city driving than highway.
 
This is almost a trick question.....the Cobra intake is actually a cheaper, cast version of the GT40, so in a way they're *almost* the same intake. For the price though, since your motor is mostly stock anyways, don't waste the extra cash on the GT40, spend it on gears. Also down the road if the need to port the intake arises, there isnt as much porting that can be done with the GT40 as there is the Cobra. If i were you, i'd look at finding a used Cobra intake.
 
i put a cobra on mine with the very minor mods in my sig and it looks a ton better, and i felt a little power and overall better drivability on my car. I do think the GT40 looks sweet tho the thing about porting is a very good thing to take into consideration...i may port mine someday.

:nono: dont go with the cobra.. gt40 is proven to flow better.. matter of fact theres some big thread about what intake is better lol the gt40 isnt a intake that came factory on a mustang like the cobra.. factory = not as good as performance in my eyes.. but gt40 flows better and the cobra costs cheaper.. you can do the cobra with gears and you'll gain more... than just a gt40 intake
 
IIRC, there won't be much gain with either intake with the stock heads. You might want to look into getting the Cobra, and sending them out to be ported by tmoss. It won't make a big difference now, but if you do heads in the future..it will.

If you have no plans to do heads anytime soon, just get the Cobra. I think there is even a Cobra replica out there that is even cheaper....
 
If you are planning to do things in pieces/stages, then perhaps gears and Cobra are the best thing for you. A plan is the key here, don't make it up as you go along or you may feel you lost opportunity and money in the end.

As a 92 GT owner of a daily driver with the same mileage as yours, my best interests are in an overall plan that will eventually get to 305hp with that torque we all value. Here are the modifcations that should get me there:

GT40 Heads
GT40 Intake
65mm Throttle Body
1.6 Rocker Arms
Underdrive Pulleys
Fuel Pump
Shorty Headers (already installed)

Its 70mm so your 70mm bbk TB will match perfect.



Whatever you end up doing, be careful. Once you get bitten by the power bug there is no cure for it but an empty wallet.

Good advice! When I bought my car in 1999 I said to myself i'm just gonna do exhaust and tints. h/c/i, 2 nitrous kits, a vortech blower and now i'm building a 347 stroker :rlaugh:
 
the intake/gears will be the only mods this year. next year I may look into getting some GT40 iron heads. I'm not wanting a total drag car. just something can keep up with the newer stuff.
 
If your going with stock GT40 heads later, you can use a stock intake with a ported lower now AND later and make the same average power over the usable rpm band and have better low speed torque. If you might use professionally ported GT40 or better flowing heads (230+cfm) then I'd suggest a used Cobra as it flows just as well as the GT40 and can be ported to flow 250-260cfm by just porting the lower intake. Go to the website in my signature and spend some time looking around.
 
most likely I will end up with one of those new replica Cobra intakes(seem to be the easiest to get). I may end up getting some ported/ploished heads next year if the cost isn't outrageously higher than out of the box stuff. I limit my $ on parts to a certain amount per year so I'll have to see then.

if I get the intake and have it installed now will I loose any bottom end? or will the 3.55s totally make up for that?

one reason I want to get a new intake instead of getting my stocker ported is that mine looks nasty, really nasty. a little performance gain plus a bit an underhood appearance is what I am looking for.
 
I have the GT40. Had it ported and then later extrude honed. I obviously have some money tied up in it but I love the thing. I got a good price on it with a coupon code a couple of years ago. Take your time and shop around. You can find a used one.
Its a great looking and flowing intake for a street engine.
On the other side of the coin you could always get a Cobra and have it polished. My friend had that done to his Cobra and it looks great.
