Ok..misinformation all over the place.
'96-'99 Cobras all use a different rod than the 2V engines.
To the untrained eye-they look alike,but there are minute differences that make them able to withstand the higher revs of the Cobra better.
The pistons in the Cobra are a 2.8cc dish,and are the same material as the 2V engine,so they're no better than the 2V piston for strength.
The 2V engines use a dished pison-the '96-'98 use approx an 11cc dish,and the '99-up use approx a 17cc dish.
In '01 Ford decided that the rods weren't as big of an issue as they thought,so they started using the same rods in all modular 4.6L's except the '03 '04 Cobras(read:cheaper to use the 2V rod),and they are more prone to failed bearings,and broken rods due to this.
