My check engine light goes on once in a while when im driving but then goes off as soon as I stop. I checked it with a code reader at home and it gave me 189 and 181 which is exactly the same thing:fuel system at rich adaptive limit at partial throttle/system lean. What is it and how do I fix it? Anyone got this? I got smog coming soon and don't want no problems.

I'm not the greatest on those codes but a guess would be you are so lean
the pcm has compensated as much as it possibly can to try and help you :)

Sounds like you might have a vacuum leak or faulty sensor somewhere

Grady

Grady is right on the nose, you have a vacuum leak somewhere. Have you done any work on the engine lately? Removed the top of the intake (plenum) recently? If not, check all your vacuum hoses and see if any of them are cracked or unplugged.

Compton, huh? I'm over in West LA.

Both gents are on the money. If the vac leak doesnt yield results, check the MAF function and/or clean the wires. Ensure the ECT is calibrated as well.

As wise ol' Mr Grady :hail2: said, the issue should be a vac leak however. It can take awhile to hunt those down.

Good luck.

Thanks for the info. Just did a tranny swap from auto to 5-speed but those codes came up before all of that along with the faulty pip code, but that has been taken care of. Ill check for vac leaks. Oh I did throw in headers a couple of months ago and I have noticed the engine light after that. And yes im Stang Bangin in compton!

Many others deserve such an accolade more than I. :hail2:

Saleener, if you have not, clear the KAM and see what codes you spit now.
