Coil Spring question

I have a 67 coupe which was originally a 6 cyl car. I swapped in a 302/AOD
Disk brakes, 9", etc.

When I rebuilt the front end, I replaced the very weak 6cyl front coil springs.
I ordered the coils from Glaziers (who has been very good by the way) and at thier recommendation, used #8088 which is a 258lb capacity coil.
my front wheels cleared just fine in the garage, but when my wife and I got in the car for a ride, the right front wheel caught the lip of the passenger fender and rippped off my chrome trim. Luckily, it did no fender damage.
The issue turns out to be the amount of spring compression when there is two people in the car. The front drops 1 1/2" with 2 people in the car!
I emailed Glaziers and Fred replied back, suggesting the #8090 coil which has a 291 LB capacity.


I wanted to see if anyone else has any words of wisdom or experince with which coil I should use.

I am not sure of the original weight springs for your car...But I can tell you I am running 620lb springs in the front of my 65. These are one inch lower than stock though. I feel that the 291 is pretty soft! just my .02 good luck!

I am not sure the 258 spring had any more capacity than the 6 cylinder springs you took out.

I have 620s in mine as well, but I put 550s in a Maverick I had and the ride vs handling ratio was very comfortable.

If you want stock ride height go with the 8534 springs. These were the same springs that came on a 302 with an C4 (according to their chart). The C4 is lighter then an AOD so unless you have aluminum heads and or aluminum intake your setup is currently heavier then the HD setup with 302/AC/Auto trans. At a minimum you should use the 8318 springs.

Thanks for the feedback. I measured from the center of the hub to the lip of the wheel well and it is 12 1/2". Like I said, it drops 1 1/2" with 2 people in the car.

Dumb question, but when you guys said 620lb springs, I assume you are talking per set, correct?

No, per spring. Don't get the 620s, they are way to still for a 302. As I understand it, the 620 actually refers to the spring material and they are more like 580 or so.

I think you will find the 620s to be a harsh ride. They are more for curve carving. I'm running progressive rate springs by Eibach rated at 480 and with my 175 lb rear end and my wife shhhh (160) I've not had any rubbing and my front is lowered by 2".

The tires should not rub no matter what the spring rate. What wheels and tires did this?

I don't remember exactly what tire size off hand ( I'm @ work now). The wheels are 15x7 with 4.25" backspacing, I believe. I know I used the tire size chart found here Mustang Wheel and Tire Size as a guide, so I'm relatively sure I have that right.

In looking at the spring chart, I think they recommended the wrong springs. I'm guessing the ones I got have a much lower ride height coupled with a spring rate that is much too soft.

Can someone take a measurement for me from the center of the hub on a front wheel to the lip of the fender? Preferably someone who has a stock height setup.

Measurment from my car would do you no good since i have a coil over setup, but i know the springs used on the back of say a 2003 mustang GT (obviously back doesnt need to be as heavy rating since its not holding as much weight) was a 210lbs spring. id say in the 500-550 range would be what your looking for. 258lbs would be more for a really stiff coil-over spring.
